Open Carpentries Instructor Training Course

The Open Carpentries Instructor Training Course is a two-day program designed to prepare members of the library community as Carpentries instructors. The course will take place on August 30-31 at the University of Calgary Libraries in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

About the Course

The course is open to anyone and will focus on evidence-based education techniques and hands-on practice. The sessions will be led by Carpentries staff and community members, including Karen Word, Juliane Schneider, and Chris Erdmann.

What is Library Carpentry?

Library Carpentry is a global community of library professionals who are developing Carpentries-style lessons to train the library community in software and data skills. The movement is supported by grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and is actively creating training modules for librarians and holding workshops around the world.

Benefits of Certification

Certification as a Carpentries Instructor will help refine workshops, teaching modules, and grow the movement. Certified instructors can start hosting their own Library Carpentry, Software Carpentry, or Data Carpentry events on their own campus or within their own organization.

Prerequisites

Applicants must agree to:

• Abide by The Carpentries Code of Conduct
• Teach at a Library Carpentry workshop within 12 months of completing the course
• Complete three short tasks after the course to complete the certification

Costs

The course is funded under an IMLS grant and supported by the California Digital Library. No one will be turned down based on inability to pay, and a small number of travel awards will be made available.
