Program Overview


Art (B.F.A.) Program

The Art (B.F.A.) program is designed for students who wish to pursue a professional degree in fine arts. To qualify for the B.F.A. degree, students must complete the required art core courses, introductory art history courses, and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00 in all art classes.


Program Requirements

  • Complete required art core courses:
    • ART 1050 Basic Design (3 hours)
    • ART 1300 Drawing 1 (3 hours)
    • ART 2300 Drawing 2: Figure Drawing (3 hours)
  • Complete introductory art history courses:
    • ARH 1010 Art and Society in the West: Ancient to Medieval (3 hours)
    • ARH 1020 Art and Society in the West: Renaissance to Modern (3 hours)
    • ARH 1030 Survey of Non-Western Art History (3 hours)
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00 in all art classes

Course Descriptions

ART 1050 Basic Design

This course provides students with a working comprehension of the elements and principles of design in various media. Students develop a strong studio work ethic, increase creative problem-solving capabilities, and discover ways to communicate ideas visually.


ART 1300 Drawing 1

An introduction to drawing, surveying its use as a foundation for future study in all 2D and 3D media. Various levels of this studio art medium may meet together, with different course requirements for each level.


ART 2300 Drawing 2: Figure Drawing

A class focused on the human figure and portrait, covering basic anatomy, movement, and composition. This class benefits students interested in all artistic media, providing an understanding of the human form.


ARH 1010 Art and Society in the West: Ancient to Medieval

A survey of art and architectural history in the western hemisphere, considering significant monuments from prehistory to the medieval period.


ARH 1020 Art and Society in the West: Renaissance to Modern

A survey of art and architectural history in the western hemisphere, considering significant monuments from the Renaissance to the twentieth century.


ARH 1030 Survey of Non-Western Art History

A survey of African, Asian, Native American, and Pre-Columbian arts.

Art Electives

  • 32 hours of electives, which may include courses in studio, art history, aesthetics, and selected topics courses offered within the department.
  • Must include completion to the fourth level in one medium or to the third level in two different media.
