Program Overview


Art (B.F.A.) Program

The Art (B.F.A.) program is designed for students who wish to pursue a professional degree in fine arts. To qualify for the B.F.A. degree, students must complete the required art core courses, introductory art history courses, and introductory courses in 2-D and 3-D media.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the B.F.A. program, students must:


  • Complete or be currently enrolled in required art core courses (ART 1050 Basic Design, ART 1300 Drawing 1, and ART 2300 Drawing 2: Figure Drawing)
  • Complete one introductory art history course
  • Complete introductory (1000-level) courses in both 2-D and 3-D media
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.00 in all art classes at the time of review

The B.F.A. program consists of:

  • Art History, Theory & Criticism (15 hours)
    • ARH 1010 Art and Society in the West: Ancient to Medieval (3 hours)

    • ARH 1030 Survey of Non-Western Art History (3 hours)
    • Art History elective (must be 3000-level or 4000-level) (3 hours)

Course Descriptions

ART 1050 Basic Design

This course provides students with a working comprehension of the elements and principles of design in a variety of media. Students develop a strong studio work ethic, increase creative problem-solving capabilities, and discover ways to communicate ideas visually.


ART 1300 Drawing 1

This course introduces students to drawing by surveying its use as a foundation for future study in all 2D and 3D media.


ART 2300 Drawing 2: Figure Drawing

This course focuses on the human figure and portrait, covering basic anatomy, movement, and composition. Students work with a model in each class session to develop an understanding of the human form.


ARH 1010 Art and Society in the West: Ancient to Medieval

This course surveys art and architectural history in the western hemisphere, considering significant monuments from prehistory to the medieval period.


ARH 1020 Art and Society in the West: Renaissance to Modern

This course surveys art and architectural history in the western hemisphere, considering significant monuments from the Renaissance to the twentieth century.


ARH 1030 Survey of Non-Western Art History

This course surveys African, Asian, Native American, and Pre-Columbian arts.


ART 3000 Art Theory and Critism

This course surveys different methodological and theoretical approaches to art criticism and art production of the twentieth century.


ART 1100 Painting 1

This course introduces students to basic design and color theory, composition, and use of light as it relates to painting.


ART 1200 Digital Media 1

This course focuses on the creative, expressive potential of digital media, emphasizing building a formal foundation utilizing image processing software, HTML, and CSS.


ART 1400 Printmaking 1

This course introduces students to the techniques of printmaking, including relief print, serigraph, intaglio, and lithography.


ART 1500 Photography 1: Digital

This course introduces students to the basic tools and techniques of digital photography, focusing on the technical craft of using the camera, creating digital prints, and interpreting photographs.


ART 1550 Photography 1: Darkroom

This course introduces students to the basic tools and techniques of darkroom photography, focusing on the technical craft of using the camera, creating silver gelatin prints, and interpreting photographs.


ART 2550 Photography II: Darkroom

This course introduces students to the basic tools and techniques of darkroom photography, focusing on the technical craft of using the camera, creating silver gelatin prints, and interpreting photographs.


ART 1600 Ceramics 1

This course develops a basic foundation and understanding of clay, its nature, attributes, possibilities, and limitations, through basic handbuilding and throwing techniques.


ART 1700 Sculpture 1

This course introduces students to the basic language of sculpture, spatial concepts, and technical processes as they relate to sculptural practices.


ART 1800 Metalsmithing 1

This course introduces students to the basic tools and techniques of metalsmithing for use in body ornament or as small sculptural form.


ART 1000 Art in the Elementary School

This course studies age- and developmentally-appropriate philosophy, methodology, processes, and content for visual arts instruction in the elementary schools.


ART 2000 Art in the Secondary School

This course surveys teaching visual arts education in the secondary schools, emphasizing administration, organization, curriculum, and philosophy of art in education.


ART 3980 Junior Project

This course helps students formulate an inclusive portfolio of their work and a thesis for presentation in the Senior Comprehensive.


ART 4980 Senior Comprehensive

This course prepares seniors in art for graduation, including experiences in planning, promoting, and opening a senior gallery exhibition.
