Application Process: Master of Arts in Sociology

The Master of Arts in Sociology program at Nipissing University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of sociological theories, methods, and practices.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission, applicants must hold an Honours BA in Sociology or a related field, with at least a 75% average on the last ten full courses completed at the time of application.

Language Requirements

English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements must be met by all applicants.

Admission Process

The admission process involves the following steps:

1. Regular Admission: Applications are reviewed by the Program Admissions Committee (PAC) and forwarded to the Graduate Studies Office for approval.
2. Conditional Admission: Conditional offers of admission may be made, with conditions outlined in the offer of admission.
3. Special Admission: Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for exceptional or special admission.
4. Admission with Transfer Credit: Applicants who have completed work towards a Master's degree but have not graduated may be eligible for transfer credit.

Registration Status for Graduate Students

Graduate students are referred to as full-time or flex-time, with access to university facilities and expected to participate in academic life.

Time-to-Completion Regulations

The Master of Arts in Sociology program has a time-to-completion regulation of:

• 1 year for full-time students (MRP option)
• 2 years for full-time students (Thesis option)

Continuous Registration

All graduate students must enroll in course offerings from each academic term until they have completed program requirements.

Extensions

Extensions may be permitted under exceptional circumstances, with a maximum of three terms.

Nipissing Balance of Degree Fee

The minimum total academic fee is predetermined by the length of the graduate program, with a balance of degree fee owing assessed prior to graduation.
