Program Overview
Nursing (BS)
The Nursing major at Seattle Pacific University offers a rigorous program of study that challenges students to strive for excellence in the classroom and clinical settings. The program emphasizes both health promotion and illness care, fostering the development of critical thinking, ethical thought and action, judgment, collaboration, and caring.
Program Description
The Nursing program integrates the Christian faith with scientific knowledge and clinical expertise, working with patients as whole beings, considering their mind, body, spirit, and surrounding environment. The program seeks to graduate people of competence, character, and caring.
Entering and Completing the Major
To enter the Nursing major, students must complete prerequisite courses, including Human Anatomy and Physiology, General Microbiology, Survey of General Chemistry, and General Psychology. Students must also maintain a minimum GPA of 2.85 in the combined prerequisite courses, with all prerequisite grades a "C" (2.0) or higher.
Admission Criteria
Applicants may complete all coursework at SPU or transfer prerequisite, general education, and elective coursework from other institutions. SPU students must be in good standing and currently enrolled full-time at SPU. Transfer applicants must have completed either a Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) degree or 90 transferable credits by the end of the quarter prior to entry into the nursing program.
Program Requirements
The Nursing program requires 125 credits, including 80 upper-division credits. The program includes core requirements, such as Health and Illness, Professional Nursing, and Health Assessment, as well as elective courses.
Suggested Course Sequence
The suggested course sequence for freshman entry includes completing prerequisite courses, such as Human Anatomy and Physiology, General Microbiology, and General Psychology, prior to program entry. The sequence also includes completing common curriculum courses, such as University Colloquium, Academic Inquiry and Writing Seminar, and Christian Scripture.
Nursing Course Curriculum
The Nursing course curriculum includes courses such as Health and Illness, Professional Nursing, and Health Assessment. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in nursing, including theoretical and practical knowledge.
Professional Licensure Disclosure
SPU's Bachelor of Science in Nursing meets the educational requirements for licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Washington. However, eligibility for licensure may involve more than degree completion and may include professional examinations, background checks, and fingerprinting.
