Program Overview

The Field Research & Internship program in Strasbourg offers students the opportunity to work directly with local faculty to produce a specific research project linked to their major or interests. After 5 weeks of coursework, students cross academic borders and work with international professionals to gain valuable skills for their career or graduate studies.

Academics

Fields of Study

The program is open to students from all UC majors, with a focus on Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, and Engineering.

Courses and Credit

• Students take a full-time course of study, consisting of 5 courses for a total of 27 quarter/18 semester UC units.
• Courses include:
  • French Politics and the Evolving State, since Napoleon
  • France in the World since 1945
  • French Society: Problems and prospects
  • Globalization: Historical, critical and French societal perspectives
  • Internship/Field Research

Internships

Internship Experience

• Duration: 12 weeks
• Average Hours: 35 per week
• Earned Credit: 10.5 quarter/7 semester units
• Language: All internships in Strasbourg are conducted in French.

Internship Placement

The Institute for Field Education (IFE) coordinates internship placements based on students' goals and academic objectives. Students work closely with IFE to arrange an internship that fits their academic and professional goals.

Housing Options

• Apartment: Self-arranged, with private or shared bedroom and bathroom.
• Dorm: Self-arranged, with private or shared bedroom and shared bathroom.
• Homestay: Placed with a host family, with private bedroom and shared bathroom.

Estimated Program Costs

UCEAP estimates include UC tuition, round-trip airfare, housing, meals, program excursions and activities, passport and visa fees, books, supplies, and other living expenses.

UCEAP Support

UCEAP provides support for students throughout the program, including academic advising, program logistics, and emergency assistance.

Eligibility

Eligibility Criteria

• UC Enrollment: Students must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student with a UC campus, or on filing fee status, or on an approved educational leave or other approved leave status.
• Academic Standing: Students must be in good academic standing as defined by their UC campus.
• Language Prerequisite: Minimum of 7 quarters/5 semesters university-level French.

Application

Application Process

Students apply through UCEAP, and are nominated by their campus study abroad office. Students then complete an online placement form for IFE, and work with IFE to arrange an internship that fits their academic and professional goals.
