Incarnate Word Cardinals Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Incarnate Word Cardinals (IWC) Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) offers an intensive 8-week summer undergraduate research experience on synergistic innovations in mathematics, statistics, data science, and related fields. This program is hosted by the School of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (SMSE) at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW).

Overview

The REU Program hosts 9 undergraduate researchers and offers a wide array of enrichment activities, including mini-courses, workshops, field trips, research colloquia/seminars, and networking opportunities. The program is committed to fostering diversity and building an inclusive research community that empowers underrepresented groups in STEM fields, such as minority students, women, first-generation students, and students from institutions with limited research opportunities.

Eligibility

• Students do not need extensive prior research experience but should have a strong academic background in STEM subjects and complete a minimum of two semesters of Calculus or equivalent mathematical training.
• The program begins with a 4-day mini-course covering essential topics like linear algebra, differential equations, statistics, data analysis, computer programming (Python/MATLAB/Mathematica), and more.
• Students who will benefit most are those eager to apply quantitative and computational skills to tackle real-world challenges in areas like disease modeling, environmental management, quantum computing, and more.

Who Can Apply

We invite applications from students who will be rising sophomores or juniors in Fall 2025 at a college/university in the United States. We especially encourage applications from students who are underrepresented in STEM disciplines.

Program Details

Location

The REU Program, including enrichment and social activities, will be held at the University of Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas.

Activities and Events

The REU Program will support summer researchers in their professional development goals, including various workshops on graduate school planning and professional development, research seminars, social events, and more.

Commitment

The REU Program is a full-time commitment that requires students to participate in research, seminars, and workshops. We strongly recommend that participants plan to keep other weekly commitments to a minimum (less than 15 hours per week).

Funding

Stipend

The REU Program offers a competitive stipend of $600 per week for the duration of the program.

Taxation

1099 forms will be issued to students. Please note that the stipend is taxable.

Travel Funds

A travel stipend will be available for eligible students.

Housing and Meals

Students who require summer housing will be housed in Dubuis Hall at UIW campus for the duration of the program. Additionally, a meal plan will be provided for the UIW campus dining facility.
