Program Overview

Course Description

The course builds on the basics of Arabic language and develops from the word level to sentence level, and ventures into connecting sentences. The topics include traveling, asking about others, asking for directions, shopping for groceries, making reservations, taking transportation, etc. The course provides more extensive vocabulary, explains sentence structures, and introduces sentence connectors. It specifically enhances reading skills and allows students ample practice to speak in life-like situations.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, students will be able to:

• Read full and connected sentences.
• Write full sentences.
• Understand extensive vocabulary relevant to a wide variety of activities and daily life.
• Hold short but understandable conversations in Arabic about several real life situations such as traveling, asking about others, asking for directions, shopping for groceries, making reservations, taking transportation, etc.
• Grasp functional grammatical concepts to form and connect sentences.
• Develop an appreciation of Arabic culture.

Study Material

All learning materials on vocabulary building, grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening are regularly made available on the digital learning platform.

Teaching and Evaluation Methods

Students use material and guidelines made available to them on the digital platform to learn independently. In addition to texts, the material includes recorded lectures that explain the relevant lessons, as well as practice drills, and links to online resources when applicable. Students finish assignments based on the shared material, and may include written or recorded tasks. While there are no scheduled meeting times, students can reach out to the teacher with any questions and concerns via email or the digital platform. Virtual office hours and sessions can be arranged upon the request of students and when needed. Evaluation is based on completion assignments and final creative projects.

Grading Scale and Evaluation Criteria

Pass/Fail.

Amount of Work Depending on Modes of Study

• Independent study (includes learning tasks) 40 h
• Complete assignments and exercises 30 h
• Final project 11 h
• A total of 81h. One credit corresponds to 27 h of student work (3 x 27 h = 81 h).
