Introduction to End of Life Doula

The Introduction to End of Life Doula course is designed for individuals who wish to take on a support role during the complex and emotionally profound stage of life. This 13-week course helps clients and their support networks navigate end-of-life challenges.

Course Overview

In the course, students learn about the role of the end-of-life (EOL) doula through online classes and discussions. They also practice their skills in simulation labs, which are set up like realistic hospital environments. The labs have technology that records practice sessions, allowing students to review their skills.

Labs

The simulation labs provide hands-on experience, enabling students to develop their personal approach to end-of-life care. During the labs, students practice supporting clients and their families, allowing them to apply their knowledge in a practical setting.

Course Topics

The course explores the following topics:

• The ethical and legal context of end-of-life
• Cultural, emotional, political, and spiritual dimensions of death and dying in Canada
• The grieving process
• Indigenous perspectives of end-of-life care
• Medical assistance in dying (MAID)

Students learn to reflect on their own cultural influences and develop a personal approach to EOL care. They also learn about compassionate and culturally safe communication, and how issues of equity and social justice influence EOL care.

Online and In-Person Learning

The course features weekly online lessons and weekly online group discussions. Additionally, there are monthly Zoom sessions and three in-person lab simulations at the VIU Nanaimo campus on Saturdays.
