Medical Device Reprocessing Technician Program
The Medical Device Reprocessing Technician program is a 22-week full-time certificate program that provides students with the knowledge and training to sterilize and reprocess surgical and patient care equipment.
Program Overview
This non-credit program is designed to prepare students for a career as a Medical Device Reprocessing Technician. Students will gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in decontamination, sterilization, storage, and distribution of equipment in a medical device reprocessing area.
Program Content
The program consists of three main components:
- Medical Device Reprocessing Technician: Theory (140 hours)
- Medical Device Reprocessing Technician: Clinical Skills Basics (56 hours)
- Medical Device Reprocessing Technician: Clinical/Practicum (344 hours)
Course Delivery
The program is offered on a full-time basis over 22 weeks. The theory course is delivered online, and the clinical skills and practicum components are held in hospital sites in Nanaimo and Victoria.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 graduation
- Grade 12 English with a grade of "C" or better, or acceptable equivalent
- Successful completion of Medical Terminology and Anatomy & Physiology (OSME 002), or equivalent course, within 2 years prior to MDRT program start date
- Successful completion of Interpersonal and Employment Skills for Health Care Workers (HHIP 001), or equivalent course, within 2 years prior to MDRT program start date
Other Program Requirements
Students must also provide proof of successful completion of the following:
- Criminal Record Check
- Immunization Requirements Form
- HSPnet Student Consent Form
- Island Health Confidentiality Acknowledgement Form

- Application Deadline: April 30, 2026
- Document Deadline: May 15, 2026
- Registration Deadline & Non-refundable $200 Tuition Deposit Due: Within 3 weeks of admission offer
- Balance of Tuition Due: September 8, 2026
- Last day to withdraw (no refunds will be issued after this date): September 8, 2026
- Program Start: October 6, 2026
- Program End: March 19, 2027
Program Fees
The program fees for 2026 are:
- Tuition: approximately $10,391.34 (pending Senate approval)
- Application fee: $46.98
- Student Union: $120 (approximately)
- Health and Dental Plan: $285 per year
- Criminal Record Check fee: $47.35
- Textbook: TBA
Certificate Completion Requirements
To be eligible for the Certificate of Program Completion, students must successfully complete all courses with a minimum of 75% in MDRT 001 and MDRT 002. Students must also attend all scheduled classes, labs, and practicum experiences.
