Post-Degree Diploma in Fisheries and Aquaculture

Course Description

This course is the first in a series designed to give senior students the opportunity to increase practical experience, industry-relevant knowledge, and enact team leadership roles used for a modern work environment. Some Applied Techniques sub-topics include invertebrate, micro-algae, and finfish culture, salmon spawning enumeration, environmental monitoring, aquatic animal health, or aquaculture alternatives.


Course Summary

This course provides an experiential learning environment focused on key skills and techniques used in industry. Here, students will learn industry-relevant practices by working alongside instructors in realistic environments. Students will be asked to gradually demonstrate mastery of techniques and leadership roles.


Course Details

  • Hours/Week: Lecture/lab/seminar hours per week: 3. Total hours: 30
  • Credits: 3
  • Course Duration: 15 weeks
  • Time: Wednesday 1:30 to 4:30 pm. No classes will be held on Statutory holidays or during VIU study days
  • Location: Nanaimo Campus | Building: TBD or off-campus
  • Online Location: VIULearn
  • Prerequisites: Admission into the Post Degree Diploma in Fisheries and Aquaculture
