Introduction to SDI Projects

The concept of "infrastructure" has expanded to include different kinds of information infrastructure, which include spatial datasets, databases of government information, and the Internet as a means of conveying that information, all organized according to data standards. The term "Spatial Data Infrastructure" (SDI) is used to describe the collection of technologies, policies, and institutional arrangements that provide a basis for spatial data discovery.

SDI Training

Vancouver Island University has significant expertise in the areas of SDI and GIS, currently delivering a number of courses and a post-graduate diploma (Advanced Diploma in GIS Applications). VIU faculty have also been involved in two significant SDI training initiatives: the National Lands Service of Lithuania and the Ukrainian SDI Training Program.

VIU ADGISA Transfer Program

Ukrainian students who have participated in the Ukraine SDI Training Program are eligible to receive VIU course credit for each of the SDI courses that they have successfully completed. Transfer credit would be assigned as follows:

• SDI-01 - GEOG 501
• SDI-02 - GEOG 511
• SDI-04 - GEOG 523
• SDI-05 - GEOG 581
• SDI-06 - GEOG 593

Admission Requirements

To apply for the GISO program and receive the above-noted transfer credit, students from the Ukraine SDI Training Program will require:

• A University degree or technical diploma from an appropriately accredited college or institute in their own language and a certified copy translated into English.
• All transcripts in their own language along with certified copies translated into English from an appropriately accredited institution for all years attended.
• Evidence of proficiency in English (i.e., IELTS overall 6.0 (with no band under 5.5) TOEFL over 550 (with no section under 56), TOEFL iBT 80 (with no section under 19)).
• CDN$150 application fee
• Tuition fees for remaining courses $8700* (International Tuition for the full GISO program is CDN$17,400 for 10 courses*).
• Student fees (currently CDN$666.00 for on-campus students)*

Program Courses

The following courses are part of the Ukraine SDI Training Program:

UKR01: Introduction to GIS for SDI

This course is an overview of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). It covers the various technologies that make Spatial Data Infrastructures possible, including vector and raster-based data sources, map projections, cartography, and geodesy.

UKR02: Database Management Systems for SDI

This course is an introduction to the structure and use of geodatabases. It presents a foundation of general database theory, along with instruction and practical exercises relating to Esri's geodatabase structure.

UKR03: Spatial Cadastral Information Systems for SDI

This course focuses on managing the spatial component of land cadastral information systems. It covers parcel-based land information systems as well as the information and communication technologies associated with creating, maintaining, and accessing the information and data in a cadastre database.

UKR04: GIS Project Management for SDI

This course teaches strategies for successful GIS management and implementation. It examines GIS from small-scale project-based GIS initiatives through to large-scale enterprise GIS implementations.

UKR05: Spatial Modeling and Applications for SDI

This course examines the impact that the Internet has had on GIS and the directions in which Internet GIS is going. It covers the different ways geographical information can be displayed on the Internet, including Internet mapping systems such as Esri's ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server, and Google Maps.

UKR06: Web GIS and Geoportals for SDI

This course reviews a range of spatial data analysis and modeling techniques. Students gain hands-on experience in applying these techniques using GIS software. It introduces a general framework for spatial modeling using ModelBuilder in ArcGIS and covers network modeling, suitability modeling, terrain models, spatial interpolation, and spatial regression techniques.
