Overview

This unit focuses on applying mathematical skills in everyday contexts, such as managing personal finances, interpreting data, and solving practical problems encountered in various occupations. Students will develop the ability to analyse situations, interpret mathematical information, and apply it to real-world decision-making. The unit also aims to strengthen overall numeracy skills through activities involving personal finance, data analysis, and the use of technologies such as graphical calculators, Microsoft Excel, and GeoGebra. The skills developed in this unit support future tertiary studies in science, business, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.


Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:


  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles of mathematics, including financial mathematics, descriptive statistics, and statistical applications.
  2. Utilise technology to explore mathematical concepts, solve problems, and visualise results.
  3. Apply mathematical knowledge to solve problems in a variety of contexts, including real-world and abstract situations.
  4. Organise and present information and data in both tabular and graphical formats.
  5. Participate in an academic community through reflective and critical engagement in academic texts and understanding of principles of academic integrity.
