MSFFM2014 - Select and Apply Hardware

Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select and apply hardware to new or refurbished furniture or cabinetry. Furniture may be made from any material and may be freestanding or fitted, including kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. Workers with this competency follow established procedures in timber technology industries such as cabinet and furniture making.

Assessment

For Melbourne Campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines. Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:


  • Select and apply 6 different items of hardware to cabinetry or other furniture items, including at least 3 of the following:
    • Basket and lift systems
    • Hinges
    • Handles
    • Drawer-runners
    • Metal drawer systems
    • Sliding rail systems
    • Rotating or slide-out storage systems Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:
  • Workplace procedures for:
    • Work health and safety
    • Quality assurance and tolerance levels
    • Reporting of equipment faults and material defects
  • Furniture production workflow
  • How to interpret basic aspects of furniture design documentation
  • Furniture materials and suitable hardware types and attachment methods:
    • Manufactured board
    • Solid timber
    • Metal
  • Hand and power tools and personal protective equipment (PPE) typically required for hardware application
