Unit Overview
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills, and knowledge required to undertake remedial massage consultations in a clinical setting. This includes provision of remedial massage treatments, as well as clinic preparation for consultation, client assessment, and monitoring of client progress and outcomes. It incorporates understanding of industry practices and professional development opportunities for remedial massage therapists. This unit applies to remedial massage therapists.

Assessment
For Melbourne Campuses
Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements. This includes the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes within periodic and scheduled timelines.
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
- Perform the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 200 hours of massage clinic work that involves:
- 40 hours of massage consultations including assessment and treatment, incorporating various treatment techniques such as compressions, effleurage, friction techniques, gliding strokes, petrissage, rocking, and tapotement.
- 100 hours of massage consultations of one hour duration including assessment and treatment, incorporating techniques like compressive techniques, deep pressure massage, friction techniques, lymphatic massage, muscle energy techniques, myofascial techniques without skin penetration, passive movement at joints, stretching techniques, thermotherapy, and trigger point techniques without skin penetration.
- Work with clients from different stages of life with varied presentations.
- Monitor and evaluate remedial massage treatments provided to at least three different clients with at least three treatments per client.
Students will also be expected to demonstrate knowledge of:
- Commonwealth and State or Territory legal and ethical considerations for client assessment and treatment, including children in the workplace, codes of conduct, discrimination, duty of care, informed consent, mandatory reporting, therapist and client boundaries, privacy, confidentiality, and disclosure.
- Client information required prior to assessment, such as case history and client expectations.
- Organisational protocols for preparing a client for treatment and the treatment area.
- Preparation of self for providing treatment, including personal protective equipment, hydration, personal hygiene, and professional presentation.
- Expectations of treatment and outcomes for different conditions and client groups.
- Cautions and contraindications for treatment and possible indications for referral.
- Methods of monitoring treatment progress and processes for recommendations for continuation and variation of treatment.
- Sources of research and evidence that support massage practice.
- Requirements of reports and documentation prepared by massage therapists.
- Professional development requirements for remedial massage therapists.
