Master's Programme in Transdisciplinary Studies of Climate, Environment and Energy

The Master's Programme in Transdisciplinary Studies of Climate, Environment and Energy is a two-year programme that explores climate change through multiple disciplinary lenses, integrating scientific, societal, and policy-driven perspectives. This programme is designed to address the multifaceted nature of climate challenges and foster innovative solutions.

Programme Overview

The programme is a 120 ECTS programme, spanning four semesters. After the first common semester, students continue on their selected study track. The programme offers nine specialised tracks, each with a unique focus.

Study Track: Transdisciplinary Approaches to Climate Change

This study track is tailored for students eager to develop innovative solutions for the climate crisis through collaboration and diverse methodologies. The track explores climate change through multiple disciplinary lenses, integrating scientific, societal, and policy-driven perspectives.

Participating Universities

This track spans three institutions:

• Stockholm University (SU, Sweden): Laying the foundation with a transdisciplinary perspective on climate, energy, and environment.
• Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS, Austria): Offering expertise in environmental law and policy.
• Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB, Belgium): Specialising in climate change governance and stakeholder collaboration.

The programme consists of four semesters:

• Semester 1: Stockholm University (SU)
  • Climate, Energy, and Environment – a Transdisciplinary Perspective (30 ECTS)
• Semester 2: Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS)
  • Introduction into Environmental and Climate History (3 ECTS)
  • Climate Litigation (4 ECTS)
  • Mountain Hazards and Risk Management (3 ECTS)
  • Hazards and Risk in an Alpine Setting (5 ECTS)
  • Natural Hazards management – Hands on (3 ECTS)
  • Proxy and Climate Data in Environmental Sciences (3 ECTS)
  • Risk and Tipping Points in the Earth System (6 ECTS)
  • Environment and Society in the Anthropocene (6 ECTS)
• Semester 3: Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB)
  • Action for Change (5 ECTS)
  • Law & Economics of the Environment (5 ECTS)
  • Interdisciplinary Project (5 ECTS)
  • Conditionally Elective courses (3 courses among the list, 15 ECTS)
    • Socio-Environmental Dynamics (5 ECTS)
    • Environmental Impact Analysis and Management (5 ECTS)
    • Circular Economy (5 ECTS)
    • Social-Ecological Systems (5 ECTS)
    • The Life of Environmental Numbers (5 ECTS)
• Semester 4: Master Thesis Project at ULB
  • The fourth and last semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis project (30 ECTS)

Continuous Transdisciplinary Stream

An extra-curricular transdisciplinary stream runs through the entire programme, offering support and checkpoints for development of independent projects.

Tuition Fees

• EU/EEA/Switzerland students: €9000 for the full programme (€2250/semester)
• Non-EU/EEA/Switzerland students: €18,000 for the full programme (€4500/semester)

Degree Awarded

Successful students will be awarded multiple or joint degrees from the partner universities (SU, PLUS, ULB).
