Program Overview

Introduction to the International Master's Program in Art History

The International Master's Program in Art History, with a focus on Technical Art History and Museum Studies, provides students with in-depth empirical and theoretical knowledge in the field of art history. The program concentrates on technical art history, the history of museums, professional practices, collection history, and archival science. English is the language of instruction.

Program Description

Through the design of courses and examinations, students develop their ability to understand and apply professional practices related to logistics, economics, law, and administration used in conservation institutions and similar settings where older art is handled. Students also develop their ability to understand and apply scientific research methods regarding the material, age, and condition of art objects. Furthermore, they learn to apply digital processes to make technical research results available in databases and to reconstruct or construct historical and current exhibition spaces in digital form. Additionally, students develop their ability to understand and apply methods in archival science and the reconstruction of historical art collections.

Program Structure and International Profile

The program has an international profile, with English as the language of instruction and international teaching competence. There are opportunities for studies and internships abroad, as well as a study trip. The program is clearly linked to both research environments interesting for the program's focus and the national and international job market. Teaching competence from relevant professional areas participates in the education.

Education and Career Opportunities

The education takes place largely in direct contact with the studied material: in the university's art collection, in laboratories, in archives, and in relevant museum environments. The program provides knowledge and skills for activities and work in the international field of art history, with a clear focus on the museum world, art trade, and similar areas. It also provides formal eligibility for, as well as a good knowledge and skill base for, education at the research level.
