Program Overview

The Master of Arts (MA) in Criminal Justice at the University of Winnipeg provides graduate training in theory, methods, and research within the criminal justice field. Key areas of focus include policing, corrections, social services, and policy development. The program offers flexibility and options for practical and applied studies, making it suitable for both traditional students and in-service professionals.

Program Structure

Students in the program will acquire an in-depth understanding of the criminal justice system and develop advanced skills in research methodology, study design, and policy development. There are two available streams:

1. Course and thesis
2. Course and knowledge synthesis project (KSP)

The MA in Criminal Justice can be completed on either a part-time or full-time basis. The typical duration for graduation is 24 months for full-time students and 48 months for part-time students.

Admission Requirements

Preferred candidates for admission are those who hold an Honours degree in a related social science discipline, such as Criminal Justice, Criminology, Psychology, or Political Science, with a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.5.

Consideration will also be given to applicants holding a standard 4-year social science degree with a strong background in theory and methods who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.5. Applicants lacking a strong background in criminology or criminal justice may need to complete additional coursework or a qualifying year.

Applicants with five or more years of experience at the line level in the justice field (e.g., police officer, probation officer) may receive credit for CJ-3800(6) Field Placement in a qualifying year, and other professional experiences may also be evaluated.

English Language Requirement

For applicants whose first language is not English, the following minimum scores are required within two years of application:

• TOEFL: Minimum overall score of 5, with no less than 4.5 in each component, or if taken before January 21, 2026, a score of 100 with no less than 22 in each component.
• IELTS: Minimum score of 7.5.
• Duolingo: Minimum score of 125.
• LanguageCert: Minimum score of 81.

Application Process

Applicants are required to:

1. Complete the online application form.
2. Submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. For initial assessment, unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
3. Provide the contact information for two individuals who can furnish letters of recommendation.
4. Submit a narrative statement (1800 characters or less) detailing reasons for applying to the program. A Curriculum Vitae or résumé may be attached if applicable.
5. Outline the KSP or thesis topic (3000 characters or less), including a summary of relevant literature, research questions, proposed methods, and preferred faculty member(s) for collaboration.
6. Optionally, include additional relevant information (1800 characters or less) for the selection committee's consideration.
7. Provide an academic writing sample from a previous course.
8. Submit English proficiency test results if applicable.

The complete application package, including all supporting documents, must be submitted by February 1.

In 2025, UWinnipeg launched its first doctoral program, the PhD in Bioscience and Policy, marking a new milestone in the university's research trajectory.

History

UWinnipeg's roots extend back to 1871, when Wesley College was founded, followed by Manitoba College. The two colleges merged in 1938 to form United College, which became the University of Winnipeg in 1967. This heritage gives UWinnipeg more than 150 years of continuous operation as an institution of higher learning in Manitoba, rooted from its earliest years in the liberal arts tradition and a commitment to serving the Winnipeg community.

The UW Collegiate

Uniquely among Canadian universities, UWinnipeg operates its own high school on campus: The UW Collegiate, offering Grade 9 through 12 programs to secondary students in an environment of academic freedom, mutual trust and critical thinking. The Collegiate's philosophy emphasises the development of mature, self-directed individuals and provides a direct transition pathway into post-secondary education at the University of Winnipeg. The Collegiate is led by its own Dean and maintains its own distinct academic mission within the broader university community.

Professional, Applied and Continuing Education (PACE)

UWinnipeg's PACE division delivers industry-aligned certificates and diplomas for working professionals, career changers and lifelong learners, with more than 600 full-time and part-time programs, courses and seminars available across business, computing, health, education and other fields. PACE is located in the Buhler Centre and has been serving the professional learning needs of Manitoba since 1972. It includes formal transfer pathways allowing PACE graduates to continue into undergraduate degree programs at the university.

Research

UWinnipeg is a research-active institution that excels in innovative scholarship of discovery and integration. Research priorities include Indigenous studies, the biosciences, environmental science, and the social sciences, with faculty engaged in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary inquiry. The 2025 launch of the PhD in Bioscience and Policy signals a significant expansion of UWinnipeg's formal research capacity at the doctoral level.
