Dance

Program Overview

York University offers two distinguished graduate programs in Dance: a Master of Arts (MA) and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA). The MA program emphasizes the understanding of dance within its cultural, intellectual, and social contexts, while the MFA program is centered on studio-intensive research in contemporary choreography through collaboration and creation.

MA in Dance

• Established: 1976
• Program Structure: A three-term program.
• Course Access: Students can enroll in courses from other disciplines, including Music, Anthropology, Visual Arts, English, and History.
• Combined Program: There is a three-year combined program that leads to both an MA and an MBA degree.
• Approach: The program combines theoretical and practical approaches to dance.
• Career Outcomes: Graduates work in various fields such as community engagement, production, therapy, teaching, administration, and archiving.

MFA in Dance

• Program Title: MFA in Dance Program: Choreography | Collaboration | Creation
• Program Focus: Reflects the collaborative nature of contemporary artistic practice.
• Program Structure: A student-centered, five-term intensive program requiring collaboration with other graduate students from diverse disciplines.
• Learning Objectives: Students will gain theoretical and technical knowledge necessary for creating multi-disciplinary performance art.
• Alignment: The MFA program aligns with the Dance Department's Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program, which is the oldest and largest of its kind in Canada, building on the 30-year history of York's internationally recognized MA in Dance.
