Course Description

This trade qualification is designed for carpenters working in both residential and commercial settings. It covers skills such as setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing, and repairing products made from timber and non-timber materials.

Mode of Delivery

This program is delivered and assessed through a combination of classroom-based learning, simulated industry workplace activities, and supervised online study. Learners are also expected to complete approximately 10 hours per week of unsupervised study, including reading, research, and revision of previous lessons.

Entry Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of course commencement.
• Prospective students may be required to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) and/or a pre-enrolment interview.
• Must have completed Australian Year 11 or equivalent level of schooling or a Certificate III or higher qualification with an Australian institution.
• Must demonstrate English proficiency with an IELTS score of 6.0 overall and no band less than 5.5, or equivalent.
• Must have basic digital literacy, including the ability to confidently use the internet and common software applications for learning purposes.
• Must be able to participate in training within a simulated workplace environment, including performing manual handling tasks.

Course Assessment Outline

A comprehensive evaluation of student knowledge and skill development will include the following assessment methods:

Assessment Types

• Written Questions or Report: Students will complete written assessments to demonstrate their understanding of theoretical concepts, procedures, and industry standards.
• Practical Activity or Project: Learners will engage in hands-on activities that simulate real-world tasks and challenges.
• Case Study: Analysis of industry-relevant case studies will enable students to apply critical thinking to complex scenarios.
• Observation: Assessment through direct observation during practical sessions will evaluate competence and adherence to safety protocols.
• Work Placement: Learners may undertake supervised work placement, with performance monitored according to workplace standards.

Award Requirements

Students will need to successfully complete all units in this course to receive a certificate. Learners who partially complete the qualification will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units they are deemed competent.

Essential Information

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) / Credit Transfer

Lead College recognises qualifications issued by other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and may grant Credit Transfer for equivalent subjects or units completed previously.

Unique Student Identifier (USI) Requirement

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is needed for all students studying with Lead College. This USI, which is available online at no cost, will stay with the student for life and be recorded with any nationally recognised VET course completed.

Orientation

Orientation is provided to assist students in acclimating to their new environment, and attendance is mandatory before commencing classes.

Students may choose to continue their studies to become a qualified builder with the Certificate IV in Building and Construction.
