Program Description

The Theatre major integrates performance studies and creative practice to ensure graduates possess a strong and diverse foundation in theatre. Students gain a deep understanding of the history and theory of performance while developing a high standard of competence in the practical, technical, and collaborative aspects of theatre.

First and Second Year

In the first two years, students gain a broad understanding across four key areas:

• Theatre studies
• Acting and performance
• Technical theatre and design
• Creative practice

All courses combine theory and applied learning, with opportunities to extend knowledge and skills through active participation in theatre productions.

Third and Fourth Year

In their third and fourth years, students refine their creative vision and academic interests through independent and performance-research projects, while enhancing critical thinking skills in the evaluation and interpretation of various theatrical genres, movements, performances, and texts.

Upper-level courses in creative practice encompass acting, playmaking, design, devising, and direction, providing in-depth exposure to advanced skills and techniques. Students will have the opportunity to apply, compare, and evaluate alternative creative approaches.

Interdisciplinary Study

Students are encouraged to study the interdisciplinary relationship of theatre with other media (e.g., film, video, digital media) and artistic practices (e.g., visual arts, playwriting).

Minor and Extended Minor

Students can engage with the UFV Theatre department while pursuing a major in another field. A minor in Theatre complements majors in disciplines such as English or History. The Theatre minor requires:

The extended minor requires:

• 15 lower-level credits
• 20 upper-level credits
