Program Overview
Pre-Nursing Program
The Pre-Nursing program is a pre-professional, non-degree program designed for students who want to work on the frontlines of healthcare, often as the first point of contact for patients seeking treatment.
Pathway to Nursing School
To pursue a career in nursing, students must follow these steps:
- Designate their major as Pre-Nursing
- Take the necessary pre-requisite courses for their desired nursing school
- Maintain a high GPA (3.0 minimum, "B" or higher in all science courses)
- Prepare for and take the HESI Admission Assessment Exam (80% score minimum)
- Complete any additional application requirements (written statement, interview, etc.)
Estimated Time to Completion
The estimated time to completion for the Pre-Nursing program and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) degree is:
- 1 year of undergraduate coursework
- 3 years of nursing school
- 4 estimated total years of school after high school

The LSU Health Sciences Center determines all financial aid and scholarships for the B.S. Nursing program. Financial aid and scholarships awarded by LSU-Baton Rouge prior to enrolling in the program do not transfer, regardless of campus.
