Program Overview
Filmmaking MA
The MA Filmmaking course at UCA Farnham is designed for aspiring filmmakers looking to specialise in one of five key pathways: cinematography, directing, producing, editing, or sound design. Students will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of the craft, working collaboratively on a slate of short films.
Course Entry Options
- MA: A one-year course of advanced study for furthering research skills and specialising within your discipline.
- MA with Integrated Pre-Masters: This course includes a year-long preparatory course of study to ready you for your Masters course, developing your specialist knowledge, research skills, and confidence in working alone.

Entry Requirements
- Honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in the subject/related discipline

Course Structure
Term One
- Launch: A week-long introduction to the University and technical workshops and facilities.
- The Craft of Filmmaking: A comprehensive introduction to key craft skills, techniques, and practices used in filmmaking.
- Optional Units: Screenwriting, Cinematography, Directing
Term Two
- Opportunity Week: A 48-hour filmmaking competition where teams write, shoot, and edit a short film.
- Film Production (non-fiction and fiction): Learning about the different roles and responsibilities of the production team and how to manage each stage of production.
- Optional Units: Producing, Editing and Post-Production, Sound Design
Term Three
- Final Major Project: The culmination of the course, where students conceptualise, research, develop, and produce a short film or feature-length screenplay.
