Program Overview


Biomedical Science explores the processes of disease, from the molecular and cellular to the organ and organism level. You will be joining the

Biomedical Research Group

, which specialises in the molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning the pathogenesis and aetiology of mammalian diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, myeloproliferative diseases, inflammation, thrombosis, tumorigenesis, vascular injury, and diabetes. We also have interests in G-protein coupled receptor signalling, the genetics of antibiotic resistance, virulence and evolution of bacteria.

We have a large multidisciplinary academic team ready to support you in your research, working across several research areas within the

Biomedical Research Group

including:

  • Cancer Cell Biology

  • Cardiovascular

  • Genetics

  • Microbiology

  • Molecular Biology

  • Pedagogy

  • The scientific facilities available to you comprise of two tissue culture laboratories, a molecular biology research laboratory and a full microbiology suite. Our advanced laboratory equipment and techniques include tissue culture with many different cell lines, cell transfection, flow cytometry, PCR (standard and real time), protein (SDS page, western blotting), ChIP Seq, fluorescence confocal microscopy and bioinformatics.

    There will be opportunities to present your work and represent us at internal, national and international scientific conferences, and you will be fully immersed in the group’s research activities. We also encourage cross-discipline interaction with other research groups in our University.

    for you as a postgraduate researcher.

    Completion times

    MPhil: full-time 1-3 years, part-time 2-4 years.

    PhD via progression from MPhil, including that period: full-time 2.5-5 years, part-time 3.5-6 years.

    Admission Requirements
    the usual entry requirement for an MPhil is a UK honours degree in a related subject, with Upper Second Class (2:1) or First Class honours or the equivalent from another country
    for direct registration for a PhD you will usually require an appropriate Masters degree from a UK university or the equivalent from another country.
    For research degrees, our standard requirement for all research degrees is IELTS 6.5 with 5.5 in each component.
