  • Engine test cell with three diverse engines
  • Mechatronics and robotics laboratories
  • Six wind tunnels

, including an environmental wind tunnel – unique within the UK – and high-quality instrumentation
  • Specialist medical engineering laboratory.

  • Professional recognition

BEng (Hons) - Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)

The accredited BEng (Hons) will meet, in part, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer and Students will need to complete an approved format of further learning pursuant to the requirements of UKSPEC. The accredited BEng (Hons) will also automatically meet in full, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

MEng - Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)

The accredited MEng fully meets the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements, for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

    Careers and graduate prospects

    We offer

    careers information, advice and guidance

to all students whilst studying with us, which is extended to our alumni for three years after leaving the University.

Over the last decade, our employment figures have been among the best in the UK. In the

    Graduate Outcomes survey 2022

    ,

results show that 95 per cent of our undergraduate mechanical engineering sciences students go on to employment or further study.

Most of our engineering graduates proceed directly to employment in an engineering profession, with an average starting salary of £25,000. There’s a wide range of careers available to professional mechanical engineers, from research and design to consultancy and manufacturing. Sectors include aerospace, offshore energy, automotive industries and medical equipment.

Employers include some of the most famous names in engineering, aerospace, energy, manufacturing and research. Students may also continue their education with an MSc or PhD at Surrey or elsewhere.

Recent graduates are now employed in roles such as:

  • Graduate Mechanical Engineer, JCA Engineering
  • Graduate Systems and Test Engineer, Lockheed Martin UK
  • Graduate Vehicle Development Engineer, Gordon Murray Design
  • PVT Engineer, Jaguar Land Rover
  • Graduate Engineer, Manufacturing Technology Centre
  • Reliability Engineer, ExxonMobil
  • Research Assistant, Brunel Innovation Centre.
  • Graduate

    Lucy Rushbrook

    Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons)

I was a member of the Formula Student Society in my final year as well as working on it as my group project. This is a great way to really get involved in designing like you would in the real world.

    Graduate

    Yusuf Shauq

    Mechanical Engineering MEng

My course helped me to choose what kind of sector I wanted to start a career in and it gave me the skills to be a strong candidate for those jobs.

    Program Outline

    Academic year structure

The academic year is divided into two semesters of 15 weeks each. Each semester consists of a period of teaching, revision/directed learning and assessment.
