Introduction to Politics and International Relations BA

The Politics and International Relations BA program at the University of Leicester provides students with a solid grounding in both politics and international relations. This degree helps students build the skills to make their mark in the field by exploring the exercise of power at national and international levels and the relationship between the two.

Course Description

The Politics and International Relations BA program offers a thorough understanding of the study of politics and international relations. Students are taught by staff with expertise from all areas of the discipline and have the opportunity to focus their studies on their own areas of interest. The program covers a wide range of exciting module choices, including the workings of political systems in Britain and other states, and explores some of the most important and interesting issues in politics.

Entry Requirements

• A/AS Levels: BBB, with all subjects accepted. Two AS-levels are considered in place of one A-level.
• EPQ with A-levels: BBC + EPQ at grade B.
• Access to HE Diploma: Pass diploma with 45 credits at Level 3, including 24 credits at Distinction.
• International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 28 points overall.
• BTEC Nationals: Full Diploma with DDM.
• T Levels: Merit in Management and Administration.
• Other subjects may be considered, as well as other official national and international qualifications.
• Second Year Entry may be possible with suitable qualifications.
• Foundation Year available for those who don't quite meet the entry requirements.

Fees and Funding

• UK Students: ｣9,790 in the first year, subject to Parliamentary approval, with expected increases in subsequent years.
• International Students: ｣20,200 per year, with a deposit required to secure a place.

Careers and Employability

The program provides students with transferable skills to equip them for a wide range of careers, including government, media, education, administration, and management in industry and commerce. Graduate destinations include employers such as BNP Paribas, HSBC, and Applus.

Course Structure

The program is offered over 3 or 4 years, with the option of a Year Abroad or Year in Industry. The course structure includes:

• Year 1: Core modules such as Introduction to Politics, Political Concepts, and Key Concepts in International Relations, as well as option modules.
• Year 2: Core modules including Preparing for your Dissertation, and a range of option modules.
• Year Abroad or Year in Industry (optional): Students can opt to take a Year Abroad or Year in Industry between Years 2 and 3.
• Final Year: Core modules including the Politics Dissertation, and a range of option modules.

Teaching and Learning

The program uses a variety of learning and teaching methods, including traditional lectures and seminars, small group work, debates, and simulation exercises. The development of transferable skills is a key feature of teaching at Leicester, with a focus on improving written communications, oral presentation, teamwork, independent learning, problem-solving, and information technology.

Assessment

Students are assessed by a variety of methods, including written examination, essay, reports, briefing papers, and presentations.
