This is for you if... you have a degree and would like to train to teach 11-18 year-olds as part of the Lead Partners scheme.

- 2:1 degree for English, Geography, History or Social Science

- Professional Skills Tests in literacy and numeracy

Degree Overview:
The PGCE Secondary (Lead Partners) is a one-year, full-time program designed for individuals with a degree who wish to train to teach 11-18 year-olds. It is part of the Lead Partners scheme, which allows schools to recruit students onto teacher education courses run in collaboration with universities. The program aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to become effective secondary school teachers. It combines campus-based sessions focusing on the principles of good teaching practice with school-based placements, providing practical experience in a variety of classroom settings.
Teaching:
The program involves a combination of university-based classes and school-based teaching placements.
- University-based classes: These sessions cover a range of generic professional issues, organized into three strands:
- Reflective Practice
- Career Development
- Professional Values
- Academic Skills Development
- School-based placements: Students undertake two secondary teaching placements in partner schools, experiencing diverse inner city and rural environments with learners from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds.
Careers:
The program prepares students for careers as secondary school teachers. The University of Leicester provides support in applying for teaching posts, including mock interviews that have resulted in job offers for students. The University also fosters continued relationships with graduates by offering professional development opportunities, Masters courses, and PhD opportunities.
Other:
- The program is run in partnership with a range of partner schools.
- Each Lead Partners provider school offers its own unique range of placement experiences and opportunities, but shares most of the Secondary PGCE Professional Studies Course with students on the University-led Secondary Education PGCE course.
- The program is graded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted (2024), adhering to the highest standards set by the Department for Education.
- The program emphasizes reflection, encouraging students to evaluate their own teaching and share their learning with peers.
- Students receive support from a range of tutors throughout the program.
UK Students
Starting in September 2024 £9,250 If you are resident outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland, you will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee. PGCE students can apply for loans from Student Finance England and may be entitled to a tax-free NCTL bursary. Starting in September 2024 £17,500 You will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee. From 2022 onwards, EU nationals will pay the International fee.
Entry Requirements:

- 2:1 degree for English, Geography, History or Social Science
- 2:2 degree for Maths, MFL, Sciences or RE
- (Exceptional circumstances may allow a Third degree with strong recommending features in the application.)
- GCSE Grade C or above in English Language and Maths.
- A-levels (or equivalent) in relevant subjects
- Recent experience working with children and/or observing teaching in a school setting (ideally relating to the age range/subject you wish to teach) is helpful.
- A pass in the Professional Skills Tests in literacy and numeracy
