Course overview

The Global Healthcare Management MSc course aims to build the leadership and management capabilities for those wishing to pursue careers within healthcare, social care, and third sector organisations.

This course aims to support the enhancement of your personal/professional knowledge, abilities to think creatively and apply entrepreneurial skills to deliver quality health and social care services and respond to the global health challenges now and in the future.

  • Develop a detailed understanding of leadership and management combined with examination of contemporary and global challenges within healthcare management.
  • This course features a range of current and management theories relevant to the health and social care sectors. In addition, it will also explore multi-cultural and international dimensions of healthcare management.
  • Provide you with an opportunity to undertake a Management Project module, developing a business case for a service improvement or enhancement which will help to develop relevant workplace skills and experience.

    Why you should study this course

  • The Global Healthcare Management MSc is offered as a full-time or part-time programme with three points of entry - January, May and September, dependent upon demand.
  • Students studying on the full-time (5 semesters) Global Healthcare Management with Professional Experience MSc course must, within the professional experience modules, undertake an internship

    with a host organisation (which may include Coventry University) or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. Please note, this version of the course is not available to those students studying on a part-time basis.
  • You will be supported by an academic and personal tutor throughout your studies and receive individual or group supervision whilst undertaking the Transforming Healthcare Business Case Project
  • The Global Healthcare Management MSc and Global Healthcare Management with Professional Experience MSc each include the Professional Development module, in which you could get the opportunity to work alongside postgraduate students from a range of disciplines and professions, studying courses across different facilities, with the potential to provide rich learning experiences and networking opportunities.
  • Learning and teaching will be facilitated by a team of highly qualified and academic staff from within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health with a range of professional backgrounds who currently have relevant subject and global expertise in business, health and social care, management and leadership (staff may be subject to change).
  • The content of the part-time programme is the same as the full-time programme above, however we may offer some flexibility in the number and timing of modules studied in any semester, subject to their availability and confirmation by the Course Director. The part-time programme normally incorporates the Transforming Healthcare Business Case Project. The normal period for the part-time programme undertaken over six semesters will be 24 months and students are usually required to complete the programme in this time frame.

    Whilst we would like to give you all the information about our part-time offering here, it is tailored for each course each year depending on the number of part-time applicants. Therefore, the part-time teaching arrangements vary. Please contact

    The course with professional experience is also the same as the standard full-time programme, just with professional experience included to extend the course to 20 months.





    Accreditation & Professional Recognition

    Coventry University’s accreditation with CMI is currently ongoing for the relevant modules, but is frequently reviewed and monitored by the CMI through their quality systems. If any changes occur with respect to our accreditation related to these modules, we will seek to notify applicants and students as soon as possible.





    Chartered Management Institute

    The MSc courses include a 10-credit module accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Leading and Creating Organisational Health and Wellbeing. Students who successfully complete the module and meet the CMI learning outcomes will gain a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice.





    Program Outline

  • Year one

  • This course features a range of current and management theories relevant to the health and social care sectors. In addition, it will also explore multi-cultural and international dimensions of healthcare management. The course is designed to develop your entrepreneurial skills and offer support with seeking employment opportunities.

    Specifically, the modules of study for all students on either the Global Healthcare Management course or the Global Healthcare Management with Professional Experience course are as detailed under the year one – Module titles.

  • Developing You as a Healthcare Leader - 20 credits

    This module offers you the opportunity to critically evaluate theoretical principles of leadership which can then be applied to your current or future practice. The module covers leadership, personal effectiveness, management of people and teamworking alongside exploring the current literature on leadership. The module offers you the opportunity to develop your reflective skills, enabling you to reflect on your own qualities as an emergent leader and to consider how to develop yourself for their future practice. The overall aim of the module is to develop leaders with the confidence and skills, enabling you to become competent and reflective in your future leadership roles.

  • Health Policy in Organisations and Systems - 20 credits

    The module critically considers the relationship between the political process; the development of health policies; and the implementation of service changes locally resulting from national and international policy drivers. You will explore the key actors and organisations in the development and implementation of global, transnational, national and local health policies and consider the drivers for health policy. You will consider the ways in which healthcare leaders communicate and market polices, how equity, equality and efficiency are incorporated into policy design, and how the effectiveness of policies are measured.

  • Global Healthcare Challenges - 20 credits

    This module develops your critical and conceptual understanding of global health issues associated with globalisation process and global change. While taking part in this module, you will develop skills for interpreting the drivers and different forms of globalisation to understand their impact on health systems ability to prevent the emergence and spread of communicable and non-communicable diseases. It prepares you to critically analyse the challenges facing not just governmental health agents, but national, regional and international partnerships coming together in order to build and manage strong health systems and healthy populations.

  • Global Healthcare Management Portfolio* - 10 credits

    The Global Healthcare Management Portfolio has two functions; to showcase achievement across the course with evidence of study output, and to enable you to critically reflect on individual learning and development as you progress with your studies.

    Alongside the presentation of material, you will maintain a journal or blog, enabling you to critically reflect on your study journey. Over the progress of the course, this will provide you with valuable information to link theory and practice, integrating learning and experience. Crucially, it provides a link between all of the taught modules, following key course themes and presenting a complete overview of Global Health Management.

    element, the portfolio will become your ongoing record of achievement and self-evaluation against your agreed personal development goals. The portfolio is a portable, flexible resource that can demonstrate your employability skills in leadership and management, as a curated collection of evidence and a log of professional achievement.

  • Leading in Complex Health Systems - 20 credits

    This module will enable you to demonstrate a critical understanding of the complexity of health systems, stakeholders and the impact of culture, values on and within health and social care organisations and global health systems. It will consider management concepts, theories, models and tools, and your critical application to healthcare organisations in global contexts and seek to understand the challenges of leading and managing complex systems, stakeholders and services and a highly professionalised workforce. You will use this understanding to critically evaluate the impact on systems and organisations delivering services to patients and service users.

  • Using Evidence and Evaluation in Healthcare Systems - 20 credits

    This module aims to support you to think analytically and build key study skills. This will enable you to cognitively engage with the complexities of evidence and consider critically how literature can be assessed, rigorously analysed and used in combination to enable understanding. This critical understanding will allow you to develop a set of high-level skills and the confidence to deploy them in both an academic and work context to make informed decisions across a gamut of global, local and professional settings.

  • Strategic Planning in Healthcare Systems - 20 credits

    This module aims to support the development of the advanced skills and knowledge of strategic planning to support decision making across healthcare systems and within healthcare organisations. You will critically examine qualitative and quantitative approaches to decision-making, the application of financial management to support the implementation of strategic plans including how to make the case for change in health systems. You will critically analyse how to ensure effective workforce planning in healthcare and how to transform and development the current healthcare workforce. You will also explore the leadership approaches to recruiting and retaining talent in healthcare systems.

  • Leading and Creating Organisational Health and Wellbeing - 10 credits

    This module aims to provide you with a framework of knowledge and understanding of how to effectively lead and develop people in organisations for better health and wellbeing using a range of approaches whatever the master’s degree of specialisation you elect to follow. You will explore for example, the influence and impact of leadership theories, culture and the impact of health and wellbeing on organisational performance in different types of organisational scenarios. You will appraise contemporary approaches for the creation of healthy work systems with emphasis placed upon modern-day methods and the role and skills of leaders in coaching and mentoring.

    Ultimately, you will be given the opportunity to propose a series of recommendations to create and sustain a positive culture of health and wellbeing within an organisational context. Finally, the module requires you to reflect critically on your personal learning and development needs and how they work with others, from an ethical and professional standpoint to encourage your continuing professional development. The question key to this module is: What effective strategies can I utilise to promote an inclusive and healthy work culture to raise and sustain employee performance levels in a range of contemporary organisations?

  • Transforming Healthcare Business Case Project - 40 credits

    The module is the culmination of the course and enables you to bring together your learning into one independent self-directed project. You will gain support through supervision with an allocated tutor, offering guidance on the focus of the healthcare management problem or issue and advice on all stages in the development and design of the proposed transformation business case. Peer-to-peer mentoring will be a key feature of the module. The project will take the form of a business case proposal, seeking to gain first stage approval for implementation from a virtual Health Executive Board. The proposal will demonstrate an analysis of an important health management problem or issue affecting service delivery, appraise the evidence for different options, undertake a quality impact assessment, proposing a realistic and viable service redesign initiative or innovation. The aim of the business case proposal will be to transform the delivery of an aspect of health care that benefits the welfare of service users and/or employees.

    Admission Requirements

    Applicants enrol onto the Global Healthcare Management MSc full-time (12 months), or part-time (24 months) OR the Global Healthcare Management MSc with professional experience full-time (20 months).

    There may be three points of entry in September, January and May, subject to demand.

    All applicants must demonstrate some recent postgraduate healthcare sector work experience and provide a clear rationale for undertaking the MSc with professional experience.

    Specific entry criteria for the Global Healthcare Management MSc full-time or part-time course are:

  • Applicants must normally be an Honours graduate of a clinical or health/social care related discipline with a 2:2 degree or above, obtained from a recognised university/HE institution, or hold an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences in an area related to the named award.
  • Applicants, whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language equivalent to IELTS 6.5, with no component less than 6.0. Alternatively students may be admitted with IELTS 6.0 if they attend and pass a compulsory five-week pre-sessional English course, operated by Coventry University, before joining the MSc course.
  • Specific entry criteria for the Global Healthcare Management with Professional Experience MSc full time course are:

  • Applicants must normally be an Honours graduate of a clinical or health/social care related discipline with a 2:1 degree or above, obtained from a recognised university/HE institution, or hold an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences in an area related to the named award
  • Applicants, whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language equivalent to IELTS 7.0, with no components less than 6.5.
  • To secure a professional experience opportunity or internship with an external organisation, applicants must meet the internship requirements, normally assessed by a formal application and interview
