Geography MGeog

The MGeog Geography program at Bangor University is a four-year integrated undergraduate degree that combines the three-year BA or BSc Geography curriculum with an additional year of specialized study and independent research. This program is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) and allows students to graduate with a master's-level qualification without the need for a separate master's application process.

Course Overview

The program focuses on research skills, data collection and analysis, and the use of specialist mapping and statistical software. Students will develop skills in research methods, data analysis, and interpretation, as well as learn about geographical research skills, including field, lab, and computer-based techniques.

Course Structure

The program consists of four years of study, with the first two years following the curriculum of the corresponding Bachelor's degree. In the third year, students will develop research skills and conduct a field-based research project. The fourth year will focus on independent research and the production of a dissertation.

Placement Year

The program offers an optional Placement Year, which allows students to spend a minimum of four weeks on placement at a location of their choice. This provides an opportunity for students to gain invaluable experience and seek a potential future employer.

International Experience Year

The program also offers an optional International Experience Year, which allows students to spend a year abroad. This provides an opportunity for students to develop their language skills, cultural awareness, and independence.

Welsh Provision

The program offers opportunities to study through the medium of Welsh, with scholarships and bursaries available for students who study part of their course through the medium of Welsh. The University provides support for Welsh-speaking students, including a Welsh-speaking personal tutor and opportunities to use Welsh in academic and social contexts.

Entry Requirements

The program has specific entry requirements, including:

• GCSE: Grade C/4 in Mathematics and English Language or Welsh
• A Levels: Including a C grade or above in Geography
• International Baccalaureate Diploma: Including grade H5 or above in Geography at the Higher Level
• Access: Science or Environmental/Land-based or Humanities course (merit grade required in the Geography element)
• BTEC National Extended Diploma: DMM-DDD in a relevant subject
• Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma: DMM-DDD in a relevant subject
• Welsh Baccalaureate: Accepted
• T-levels: Considered on a case-by-case basis
• Extended Project Qualification: Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels, or equivalent.
