Program Overview

Control and Instrumentation Engineering MEng

The Control and Instrumentation Engineering MEng program is a comprehensive 4-year course designed to equip students with in-depth expertise in control systems, sensor technologies, and instrumentation engineering. This degree combines fundamental engineering principles with advanced topics, ensuring students are well-prepared for the dynamic field of engineering.

Course Overview

The program will prepare students for work as professional electronic engineers specializing in control and instrumentation engineering, which lies at the heart of many industries, from nuclear and renewable power generation to various manufacturing industries. Students will gain extensive practical experience to ensure they develop sound practical skills as well as a thorough theoretical knowledge.

Course Structure

  • Year 1: Students will build a strong foundation in engineering mathematics, computer architecture, circuit design, and embedded systems. They will also undertake team projects to develop practical skills in project planning, sustainable management, and electronics design.
  • Year 2: The second year delves deeper into specialized areas such as VLSI and digital circuits, signal processing, control systems, and quality management. Students will engage in research methods and tackle an individual project, allowing them to explore their interests and apply their knowledge to real-world problems.
  • Year 3: In the third year, students will work on a significant MEng team project, collaborating with peers to solve complex engineering challenges. Advanced modules on sensor systems, programmable logic controllers, enterprise design, and advanced control systems will further refine their expertise, preparing them for leadership roles in the industry.
  • Year 4: The final year focuses on advanced control systems, including digital control systems, their fundamentals, and application, covering both hardware and software systems in practice. Students will have the opportunity to design, analyze, and build digital control elements.

Key Facts

  • Student Satisfaction: 95% of students were satisfied overall with their course.
  • Teaching Quality: 95% of students say teaching staff have supported their learning well.
  • Employment Rate: 90% of graduates are in work or doing further study 15 months after the course.

Careers

Graduates of the MEng Control and Instrumentation Engineering program are well-equipped for a diverse range of career opportunities in the engineering sector. With expertise in control systems, sensor technologies, and instrumentation, they can pursue roles such as control systems engineer, instrumentation engineer, automation engineer, and systems integration specialist.

Entry Requirements

  • A-Levels: Including a minimum grade B in Maths or grade C in Maths plus an additional Science/Computing/IT subject.
  • BTEC National Extended Diploma: In Electrical/Electronic Engineering, DDM - DDD.
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: Including H5 in Maths and Physics.
  • Access to Higher Education: Case-by-case.
  • T-Levels: Considered on a case-by-case basis.

Fees and Costs

  • UK and Ireland Full-Time Fee: 」9,790.
  • International Full-Time Fee: 」21,000.
  • Additional costs may include books, printing, photocopying, educational stationery, and related materials, specialist clothing, travel to placements, optional field trips, and software.

Welsh Provision

There are opportunities to use and develop Welsh-language skills at Bangor University, including studying through the medium of Welsh, Welsh-language support, and a bilingual community. Scholarships and bursaries are available for studying part of the course through the medium of Welsh.

Program Outline

The first two years of the programme follow the same modules as computer systems engineering. From the third year you are honed into a C&I Engineer, focusing very much on control theory and practice, and the necessary knowledge of signal processing and systems.

The fourth year of the degree joins the two advanced topics of Sensors and Control Systems. You will complement this with elements of industrial control in a very real sense with Programmable Logic Controllers. This is accompanied with a Team project. The project usually links to an industry partner and really stretches you to really solve a real-life industry challenge.

You will spend about 12 hours in lectures and 8 in laboratories each week. You will also have tutorials and have to write up experiments, work on software design and complete numerical problem-solving exercises.

You will have an examination for each module at the end of the semester. Some modules have coursework assessment as well. Your laboratory work books, technical reports and the individual project also contribute to your marks.
