Course Overview

The Modern Languages (with Foundation Year) BA (Hons) course is designed to challenge students' minds, connect them to other cultures, expand their horizons, and give them a global mindset. This five-year course with an integrated foundation year leads to the same qualification as the four-year BA (Hons) degree. The foundation year prepares students for degree-level study, and they can choose from various modules, including language modules, to develop their skills.

Course Structure

The course consists of compulsory and optional modules. In the foundation year, students take modules such as Transnational Cultures, Essential Skills for the Arts and Humanities, Arts, Humanities and the Future, Introduction to Research and Inquiry, and Foundation Project. They can also choose from language modules, including Beginners' German, Beginners' Spanish, and Beginners' French.

In the subsequent years, students take modules such as Chinese Language Skills, French Language Skills, German Language Skills, Italian Language 1, and Spanish Language 1. They can also choose from optional modules, including Contemporary Chinese Studies, Identities in World Cinema, Reading Fantastic Literatures, The Divided Germany, Making of the Italian Nation, and History of Galicia.

Course Content

The course covers a range of topics, including language skills, cultural studies, history, literature, and film. Students can choose to study one or two languages, including French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Chinese. The course also includes a year abroad, where students can study or work in a country where their chosen language is spoken.
