About Program

Program Overview

This new short course, Neuroscience of Psychotherapy, will look at how knowledge of the structure, functions and processes of the brain can support counsellors and psychotherapists in their clinical practice. Topics we will cover on this course include:

  • basic structure and functions of the brain and how growth and development occur at the level of neurons and synapses
  • brain laterality - the development of the left and right brains and how therapeutic processes involve left/right brain processes
  • memory consolidation and reconsolidation processes and their implications for working with traumatic memory
  • research into the neuroscientific explanations for key therapeutic processes such as empathy, transference and countertransference, and containment.
  • This 10-hour course is designed as an introductory taster for those who have no previous knowledge or experience of neuroscience.

This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.
