On this European Union Polity short course we will explore the history of European integration, the theories used to explain the development of the European Communities/Union, the constitution and the actual operation of the EU's main institutions.

We will address some of the following questions, and others related, by reviewing a broad range of academic and other materials:

  • Where does the idea of a united Europe come from in historical terms?
  • What theories have political scientists devised in an effort to explain the development of European integration?
  • What are the key features of the EU's main institutions? How do these institutions operate in practice?
  • Assessment is via an in-class quiz (10%), 2000-2500-word essay (25%) and online take-home test (65%).
