Program Overview


The aim of this module is to introduce you to basic counselling skills with a focus on the Person-Centred Approach.

Course dates

We are offering the following Introduction to Counselling courses in 2022/23 – two Saturday courses in Carlisle, two evening courses (including two Saturdays) in Lancaster and two block courses taught over one week in July (Lancaster/Carlisle). You only need to attend one of the courses. Dates are listed below.

  • Wednesdays 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th March, and 5th April 2023.5pm – 8pm. Saturdays 4th March and 1st April 2023. 9.30am – 4.30pm. Lancaster (30 hours teaching/contact – 6 evenings and 2 Saturdays)
  • Saturdays 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th March, and 1st April 2023. 9.30am – 4.30pm. Carlisle – Fusehill Street (30 hours teaching/contact – 5 Saturdays)
  • Tuesdays 23rd, 30th May, and 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th June 2023. 5pm – 8pm. Saturdays 20th May and 24th June 2023. 9.30am – 4.30pm. Lancaster (30 hours teaching/contact – 6 evenings and 2 Saturdays)
  • Saturdays 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th June, and 1st July 2023., 9.30am – 4.30pm. Carlisle – Fusehill Street (30 hours teaching/contact – 5 Saturdays)
  • Monday 10th to Friday 14th July 2023, 9.30am – 4.30pm each day. Lancaster (30 hours teaching/contact – week block)
  • Monday 17th to Friday 21st July 2023, 9.30am – 4.30pm each day. Carlisle – Fusehill Street (30 hours teaching/contact – week block)
  • Please indicate in your personal statement which course you would prefer to attend.

    Course summary

    Identification of the the basic attitudinal skills involved in counselling skills work and outline of the basic elements of the Person Centred Approach.

    By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Offer counselling skills in your interpersonal relationships as appropriate
  • Evaluate your interpersonal counselling skills at work
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the Person Centred Approach to counselling

    Timetables

    The teaching timetable should be available from the end of August. Access to the timetable is through the Student Hub – you will be able to access the Student Hub after you have completed online registration. The teaching day is 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday; please keep your other commitments open until confirmation of your teaching timetable, and bear in mind that many courses will offer placements or fieldwork which sometimes extends into the evenings and weekends.
