Course Overview
The MSc Midwifery (Pre-registration) course aims to prepare you for the complex, demanding, and rewarding area of midwifery. Become an advocate for birthing parents and newborn infants and collaborate with the wider health team to ensure a safe and successful journey. You'll build on your undergraduate experience and become a fully-qualified midwife in three years. Upon successful graduation, you'll be eligible for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified midwife.
To gain vital real-world experience, 50% of your course is spent on placement. Placement experience provides opportunities for you to experience pregNAcy and childbearing over the full continuum and includes shorter spoke placements offering a variety of experience in areas such as special care baby units, theatres and strengthening family teams. This course will allow you to obtain sought-after postgraduate credentials, with a NHS Band 5 prospective starting salary.

What you will learn
On this course, you will learn how to become an accountable professional who acts in the best interest of people. You will learn to assess the needs of patients to promote health and prevent ill health in patients at all stages of their pregNAcy journey.
The programme aims to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of all six of the NMC
domains. These domains inter-relate and build on each other and should not be seen separately.
Together these reflect what we expect a new midwife to know, understand and be capable of doing
safely and proficiently. The domains are:
1. Being an accountable, autonomous, professional midwife
2. Safe and effective midwifery care: promoting and providing continuity of care and carer
3. Universal care for all women and newborn infants
A The midwife’s role in public health, health promotion and health protection
B The midwife’s role in assessment, screening and care planning
C The midwife’s role in optimising normal physiological processes and working to promote positive
outcomes and prevent complications
4. Additional care for women and newborn infants with complications
A .The midwife’s role in first line assessment and management of complications and additional care
needs
B. The midwife’s role in caring for and supporting women and newborn infants requiring medical,
obstetric, neonatal, mental health, social care, and other services.
5. Promoting excellence: the midwife as colleague, scholar and leader
A. Working with others: the midwife as colleague
B. Developing knowledge, positive role modelling and leadership: the midwife as scholar and leader
6. The midwife as skilled practitioner Communication, sharing information and relationship
management skills: shared skills for Domains 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
Year one
To demonstrate fundamental midwifery skills professionalism and knowledge as appropriate for year one.
To develop substantial professional knowledge in relation to legal, ethical and regulatory frameworks and to understand effective communication strategies. In addition to promote reflective practice and self-awareness through the exploration of personal and professional values.
To demonstrate a developing knowledge in the principles of universal care for all women, newborns and families.
To facilitate an understanding of pre-existing physical and mental conditions and situations experienced by women, conditions and complications arising in pregNAcy, childbirth and the post-partum period.
Year two
To demonstrate evolving skills and knowledge in designated care settings.
To demonstrate midwifery knowledge and skills in advocacy, leadership, accountability and collaboration, working towards autonomous professional practice. In addition, for the student to develop strategies for maintaining personal and professional well-being.
To critically apply knowledge in relation to the principles of universal care for all women, newborns and families.
To demonstrate a critical understanding of the knowledge and skills required in relation to childbirth emergencies. In addition, demonstrate situational awareness, advanced communication skills and knowledge of human factors.
Year three
To demonstrate consolidation of learned skills and knowledge in designated care settings. To complete all practice documents in order to progress to registration as a Midwife with the NMC.
To equip students with the knowledge and skills to effectively and safely undertake physical examination of the newborn in addition to recognising and managing the newborn infant with additional care needs.
To consolidate knowledge in relation to evidence-based practice. This module aims to enable the student to undertake an in-depth exploration of a chosen aspect of midwifery practice and be able to critically appraise the evidence.
Applicants with 2:1 or higher in a relevant subject such as Nursing will be considered. Plus minimum of GCSEs with grade C or grade 4, to include English Language, Mathematics, and Biology or Combined Science. Level 2 equivalencies are accepted. However, we are unable to accept Access to HE modules in lieu of GCSEs.
Students with equivalent experience/qualifications in a field relevant to the proposed study area may be considered.

As part of the selection process, we interview short-listed candidates prior to making offers. Please note that Professional Bodies such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) have certain requirements regarding health and character status of applicants and their ability to meet the required core professional competencies and to practise safely without direct supervision.
