Program Overview
The programme aims to develop the student’s general professional & specialist knowledge and understanding of, & competency in:
Use will be made of the college engineering laboratories & the project/technology centre, supported by a virtual reality suite that can provide students with a real time immersed experience of mechanical models.
Course delivery is on a day-release basis providing an opportunity to undertake enhanced practical activities supporting technical theoretical delivery methods & embedding theoretical knowledge through experience, observation & reflection.
Graduate destinations
The Higher National Certificate meets the immediate demand for Technicians in key skill shortage areas, as identified within the Government Skills Strategy paper. Technical skills at level 4 are in short supply and the paper identifies key shortages in, and requirements for:
The programme addresses some of the technical skill requirements for projects within the operation, mainteNAce and commissioning of new systems and plants and technology. All of these projects require infrastructure development and general mechanical design work.

The programme has been developed with the assistance of a range of local employers to ensure it meets the current and future engineering needs of the region.
This programme is part of a suite of higher education programmes which have been developed to meet the need for Engineers, as identified within the Government’s Nuclear Skills Strategy document and sanctioned by the National Curriculum and Qualification Advisory Group for Nuclear (CQAG). The Higher National Certificate has been designed to provide a seamless progression pathway to the Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and, ultimately, the Level 6 B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering.

The teaching timetable should be available from the end of August. Access to the timetable is through the Student Hub – you will be able to access the Student Hub after you have completed online registration. The teaching day is 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday; please keep your other commitments open until confirmation of your teaching timetable, and bear in mind that many courses will offer placements or fieldwork which sometimes extends into the evenings and weekends.

Selection criteria
The University’s standard criteria for admissions apply. Details can be found in the Applicant Information pages of the University website. More information regarding APL can also be found on the University website. All applicants will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course. Academic achievement following 2 years post-16 study will demonstrate the capacity to benefit from the course. Thus the equivalent of 2 ‘A2’ Levels at Grade ‘D’ or
above (providing a minimum of 48 UCAS points) in science and/or maths related subjects is expected. Appropriate equivalents will also be considered.
