Program Overview


The aim of this module is to provide you with the opportunity to synthesise and critically apply fiNAcial, resource management and business planning knowledge and skills in order to enhance and develop your service.

You will need to complete an induction prior to commencement of your first module. We have a comprehensive online induction package to welcome you to both the University and your programme of study. Alternatively classroom-based induction days take place at our Lancaster and Carlisle campuses and are usually scheduled for the first week of each semester.

The running of this module is dependent on there being sufficient numbers of interest.

Graduate destinations

This module can be taken on a stand-alone basis or as a module within the MSc/PgD/C Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care. The module can also be taken as part of our MSc Practice Development award.

    Course summary

    The indicative module content includes budget planning and management, complex costing interpretation: fixed; variable; marginal direct and indirect; interpretation of fiNAcial statements; information systems to support fiNAcial and resource management; payment by results/tariffs - importance in delivering efficiency gains; effects of changes in service user activity on fiNAcial viability.

    On successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate coherent and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the complex nature of fiNAcial and resource management and expenditure including the use of management and related income streams to assess fiNAcial performance.
  • Provide an in depth critical analysis of the implications of changes in service user activity on your own service budget and how this affects the fiNAcial viability of the organisation.
  • Demonstrate conceptual knowledge and application of 'payments by results/tariffs' in terms of delivering efficiency gains and their effects on the fiNAcial stability of your commissioners and providers.
  • Demonstrate coherent and comprehensive knowledge and critical application of cost benefits analysis for capital projects, business planning and decision making in relation to development of your service.
  • Critically discuss the fiNAcial and resource management information systems required in order to support effective fiNAce and resource management in health & social care settings.

    Timetables

    The teaching timetable should be available from the end of August. Access to the timetable is through the Student Hub – you will be able to access the Student Hub after you have completed online registration. The teaching day is 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday; please keep your other commitments open until confirmation of your teaching timetable, and bear in mind that many courses will offer placements or fieldwork which sometimes extends into the evenings and weekends.
