About Program

Program Overview

The applied sport and exercise physiology course will provide you with the underpinning theoretical knowledge and the key practical skills required to work as an applied sport and exercise physiologist.

Sports and exercise physiologists often work within multidisciplinary teams, helping monitor and develop performance for individual and team-sport athletes.

Our course received 100% student satisfaction on the 2022 postgraduate taught student experience survey, and here are some of the reasons why:

  • We have a dedicated human performance clinic allowing students opportunities for hands-on real-world work experience opportunities with external athletes and clubs.

  • We have an established link with West Ham international soccer school, giving MSc students the opportunity to conduct fitness testing on football players from around the world.

  • We have an established link with the Parachute Regiment, giving MSc students the opportunity to conduct fitness testing on highly trained military personnel.

  • We have an established link with the Fashion department at UEL, giving MSc students the opportunity to work with global brands such as Umbro on co-design of sports clothing for performance improvement.

  • We have a dedicated placement officer, offering students numerous opportunities for work-based learning experience throughout the degree

  • We have award winning academic staff recognised for the quality of their teaching and passion for the subject area

  • Staff teaching on this degree work in applied practice with athletes at world championship and Olympic level

  • Program Outline

With this course, we aim to produce postgraduate students with a sound knowledge of both the theoretical and practical aspects of applied sport and exercise physiology. We will also equip you with the necessary skills to undertake individual and collaborative research.

All students take two specialist subject modules, giving you the underpinning theoretical knowledge and the key practical skills required to work as an applied sport and exercise physiologist. Throughout your studies you will gain sound scientific knowledge and develop your practical skills and experience. You will also learn to evaluate field and laboratory data, including statistical analysis. In addition to the specialist modules, students have the opportunity to apply their skills within our dedicated human performance clinic, providing students opportunities for hands-on real-world work experience opportunities with external athletes and clubs.

In keeping with our careers-led focus, all students will complete a work-based learning module. This module offers you the opportunity to develop transferable and lifelong learning skills that directly translate to your area of expertise. Working in conjunction with the employer and with an allocated supervisor, work-based learners will plan, negotiate and manage their own study including formalising and agreeing the topic of a student-led applied work-based report.

In preparation for your final research project, you will undertake a research skills module. In this module you will be equipped with the necessary skills to evaluate current literature, develop a research question and well-suited methodology. You will learn appropriate statistical analysis methods and develop a research proposal appropriate for the final dissertation module.

The individual research project is the capstone of your master's course. This module will give you the opportunity to undertake an extensive investigation of a topic within applied sport and exercise physiology. This will give you the opportunity to show your knowledge and expertise, demonstrating many of the skills future employers require.

We are investing in key areas beyond your studies including our career services, library and well-being, to be available both face-to-face on campus and online with many of these available 24/7. We have new, modern library facilities on both campuses offering inspirational environments for study and research. Libraries contain resources in print and digital formats, a range of study spaces and dedicated librarian who can assist with your learning.

If you need a bit of extra help with certain skills such

as academic writing, English, maths or statistics, our academic tutors offer workshops, drop-in

sessions and one-to-one appointments to help our students achieve their potential. You can receive advice and guidance on all aspects of the IT systems provided by the university from our IT Service Desks located on all three campuses.

Our Student Support hubs in Docklands and Stratford feature centralised helpdesks to cater for your every need. UEL provides also support and advice for disabled students and those with specific learning difficulties (SPDs).

Your overall workload consists of tutor led class sessions, practical activities and individual learning. The size of classes can vary depending on the nature of the course, module and activity. This can range from large groups in a lecture theatre setting, to smaller groups taking part in seminars and collaborative work. You will receive your personalised timetable at the beginning of the academic year dependent on your course.

Assessment tasks are mainly spread across the year to make the workload manageable. Assessment methods include group works, exams and individual work including essays, presentations, case studies, professional development and practical activities depending on the nature of the course. All grades count towards your module mark. More details will be included in the student handbook and module guides.

Feedback is provided within 15 working days in line with UEL's assessment and feedback policy.
