Program Overview
Our computing for business course teaches you how to apply emerging technology in a business environment. It covers core computing skills and specialised modules focusing on business intelligence - database systems, project management, analysis and design.
You'll have the opportunity to work on projects in the local community and further afield, applying your developing knowledge and providing practical solutions for real-life problems.
Whether you choose to continue with your studies or go straight into work, the course will equip you with the skills and expertise employers and investors are looking for.
Our Industrial Liaison Group maintains close links with industry and employers, ensuring our course reflects the latest developments in business practice and technological development.
The extended course is perfect if you want a degree in computing for business but you don't have the standard entry requirements. First we prepare you for your degree during an extra foundation year, bringing you up to speed with academic skills and a firm grounding in the subject. Then you can go on to do the full undergraduate degree.
Program Outline
The Computing for Business course is either three years full-time, four years with an optional one-year work placement or five years part-time. We're fully accredited by the British Computer Society, the chartered institute for IT, so our course will set you on the path to becoming a Chartered IT Professional (CITP).
In your first year, you'll cover core components of computing in business such as information systems modelling and design, programming, web technologies and network systems. Our practical approach to learning will ensure you get plenty of hands-on experience.
You'll also complete a year-long project of your choice in your final year, with the chance to work with others nationally and internationally.
There's also the option to undertake a year-long industrial placement after your second year, usually paid. We have long-standing links with many well-known employers who can offer you a worthwhile placement. Like many of our students, you could go on to gain permanent employment with your placement organisation.
We consistently review our courses to ensure we are up-to-date with industry changes and requirements from our graduates. As a result, our modules are subject to change.
Our teaching emphasises practical skills, giving you as much chance as possible to take learning out of the classroom and apply your new abilities in real-life situations. Schemes like our popular Going Global initiative will give you the chance to travel abroad to apply your learning.
You'll have access to first-class teaching and learning facilities and a wide range of computing resources. We use specialised labs to study operating system environments such as Windows Server and Linux, as well as networking and web technologies. You'll be given software tools for programming, database development, internet access and web-based development.
If you'd like to go on an industry placement, we can help. Our Industrial Liaison Group maintains business connections and our Placement Office is there to help you find you the right opportunity. Many students go on to work with their placement organisations after they graduate.
In your final year, you'll work on a year-long individual project of your choice. It's a chance to follow your own interests, though our research team are there to offer ideas, inspiration or advice.
A significant proportion of your time will also be spent working in groups with your fellow students. Experience of group working is essential for graduates who wish to work in the IT industry.
The size of classes can vary depending on the nature of the course, module and activity.
This can range from large groups in a lecture theatre setting, to smaller groups taking part in seminars and collaborative work. You will receive your personalised timetable at the beginning of the academic year dependent on your course. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9.00am and 6.00pm.
Throughout the course, you'll be supported by a personal tutor. There are also specialist support services for students with dyslexia or English as a second language, as well as advice services for an accommodation, finance, career, IT training and learning resources.
We'll assess you through a combination of coursework and exams. Coursework might include presentations, software demonstrations, research-based assignments and practical exercises involving system or program specification, coding and testing.
You'll always receive detailed feedback outlining your strengths and how you can improve. Feedback is provided within 15 working days in line with UEL's assessment and feedback policy.
