About Program

Program Overview


This course will provide you with an opportunity to analyse the complex factors that contribute to and shape international cyber conflict. You'll learn to demonstrate an understanding of confidence building measures as well as the socio-political complexities and legal challenges stemming from issues of attribution, accountability and sovereignty, as well as meet current global cyber diplomacy priorities and capacity building.

  • Advanced understanding of the different approaches and policies to defend and deter against cyber-attacks

  • Understanding of the cross-cultural methods and its applications to cyberspace
  • Awareness of the legal, ethical factors, and principles of international cyber norms

  • The ability to Identify the various actors and their motivations for involvement in cyber incidents.
  • The ability to succinctly present rational and reasoned arguments that address a given cyber incident or cyber deterrence opportunity, to a range of audiences (orally, electronically or in writing)
  • Skills for life and work (general skills) are developed through:

  • The ability to understand the role of a cyber diplomat in setting direction and taking responsibility for actions and decisions

  • On this course you'll be taught by a wide range of experts in their fields, you'll learn by set of core and specialised units and micro-credentials. These are delivered through practice, simulations and workshops, and focus on the principles and practice of advanced diplomacy, and Diplomacy leadership.

    Guided independent study

    When not attending timetabled lectures, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will typically involve reading articles and books, watching videos, undertaking research, working on individual and group projects as well as preparing coursework assignments and presentations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of fantastic, industry standard facilities including online resources, the library and Moodle.

    Academic support

    Dedicated personal tutor

    When you arrive, we will introduce you to your personal tutor. This is the member of staff, who will provide academic guidance, be a support throughout your time at UEL and who will show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer.

    Workload

    You will spend around 300 hours of timetabled learning and teaching activities during the year. These may be lectures, workshops, seminars and individual and group tutorials. Contact hours may vary depending on each module.

    The approximate percentages for this course are:

  • Year 1:

    Scheduled teaching - 300 hours; guided independent study - 240 hours.
  • Your timetable

    Your individualised timetable is normally available to students within 48 hours of enrolment. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9am and 6pm. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected.

    Class sizes

    To give you an indication of class sizes, this course normally attracts 30-50 students a year (this can vary by academic year). Lecture sizes are normally 40 plus students. However, in the classroom, you will do many of the experiential learning activities in small groups of up to five students, so you will have a chance to work closely with your peers, practice everything being learned and get feedback.


    Coursework will include presentations, essays, project work, practical reports, portfolio completion.

    The approximate percentages for this course are:

  • Year 1: 100% coursework, (50% case studies and 50% Writing Reporting)
  • You'll always receive detailed feedback outlining your strengths and how you can improve. We aim to provide feedback on assessments within 10 working days.
