About Program

Program Overview

The programme is designed to meet the increasing demand for transport professionals with advanced skills in sustainable, integrated and intelligent transportation systems. The programme will provide you with the fundamental and advanced engineering knowledge that a modern transportation engineer needs for planning and managing the complex multi-modal transport system.

The programme is aimed at both the home and overseas market and, in particular, professionals working in the highways, railway, aviation and the wider transportation infrastructure and systems sector or for students who would wish to work in these sectors. The programme is offering not only a natural progression route for engineering graduates who want to enhance their qualifications at the master's level, but is also be suitable for professional town planners and/ or geography students.

Our Docklands campus is geographically unique and very inspirational for offering this programme. The core elements, i.e. various transportation modes are all located within very close proximity of the actual delivery of the programme, giving a very unique and bespoke learning and teaching experience to students.

We have DLR (railway), City airport (runway), road network (including A13) and the Royal Docks/ Asian Business Port (maritime), all within few minutes of the Docklands campus and working in close partnership with us, offering all our students a unique opportunity to succeed as an industry ready professional.

Program Outline

The course consists of a number of self-contained, taught modules, organised around the various areas of civil engineering. The range of subjects covered includes mental wealth: professional life, intelligent transport systems, soil structure engineering, and highway and railway engineering.

The programme will enable learners to gain a depth of advanced knowledge, new insights, critical awareness and comprehensive understanding of the most up to date practices and theories in transport planning and engineering. Furthermore, the programme will develop learners' techniques for analysing and solving complex problems including those that may arise in various case studies and/ or real-life traffic, highway, locomotive, maritime and aerospace engineering projects.

The programme is designed to provide learners with a stimulating learning environment for understanding the role of the engineer as an important professional in society by enhancing their skillset to deal with complex and multidisciplinary issues in transport planning, smart mobility and related engineering, both systematically and creatively.

The programme will advance learners' industry readiness through engagement with industry experts and real work experience (for MSc Intelligent Transport Planning route), within the core elements of learning and assessment.

The programme will provide learners with a stimulating learning environment for understanding the role of the engineer as an important professional in society. You will be taught using inclusive learning techniques including through lectures, tutorial, seminars, lab practicals, guest lectures, visits and virtual learning systems.

To support the hands-on nature of this course, we have an impressive range of facilities. Our modern, well-equipped laboratories are open to students all day and include dedicated structures, soil mechanics, hydraulics, highways and surveying labs. We also have superb computer facilities and the very latest design and planning software.

Expert feedback and support are always on offer from our dedicated team of academics, all experts in their particular fields. The team members that will be involved in the delivery of the modules are all experts in their fields and include:

Dr Alex Apeagyei

(Highways and Transportation), Dr Sohrab Donyavi (senior lecturer in construction management),

Dr Jaswinder Lota

,

Ali Abbas

(senior lecturer in structural engineering),

Jawed Qureshi

(senior lecturer in structural engineering and design) and

Arya Langroudi

(senior lecturer in geotechnical engineering).

The programme leader for this programme will be Dr Alex Apeagyei. Apart from the existing in-house academic base, students on this programme will be taught by practitioners and guest speakers from major industries like Atkins, Costain Skanska, Laing O'Rourke and the HS2 project, to name a few.

All modules include coursework, for which you will have opportunities to apply your knowledge to engineering projects based on real-life scenarios. This coursework will include analysis and design projects, research reports, group and seminar presentations and a research dissertation project. You will also attend lectures, seminars and tutorials and you will work both individually and in groups.

Knowledge is assessed by coursework, examinations, and research dissertation. Thinking skills are assessed by solutions to practical problems, evaluation of literature and evaluation of experimental data. Practical skills and life skills are assessed by use of design aids; use of computer aided design packages; laboratory experiments; preparation of research dissertation; and seminars.
