Program Overview


Film Production BA (Hons)

The Film Production BA (Hons) course at Brunel University London is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of film production, combining practical skills with theoretical knowledge. The course covers a range of topics, including filmmaking, scriptwriting, filming, and editing, as well as critical analysis and research skills.


Course Structure

The course is available as a 3-year full-time, 4-year full-time with placement, or 6-year part-time program, starting in September. The course structure includes:


  • Year 1: Compulsory modules include The Craft of Filmmaking, The Professional Self, Technology, Industry and Form, Representation and Identity, Creative Project Development, and Film and TV Analysis.
  • Year 2: Compulsory modules include Advanced Filmmaking, Understanding the Film and TV Industries, and Professional Practice. Optional modules include World Cinemas, Critical Perspectives, Film and Television Genres, Animation, and Filmmaking as Activism.
  • Year 3: Compulsory modules include Analysis of Film and Television Work Experience, Dissertation Practice, and Dissertation Video Essay. Optional modules include Gender and Sexuality, The Horror Film, Alternative Film and Video Practice, and Documentary: Image and Violence.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the course include:


  • GCSEs: A minimum of five GCSEs, including GCSE English Language (grade C/4) or GCSE English Literature (grade B/5).
  • A-level: Standard offer BBB, contextual offer BCC.
  • BTEC National Extended Diploma: Standard offer DDM, contextual offer DMM.
  • International Baccalaureate: Standard offer 30 points, contextual offer 28 points.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 (min 5.5 in all areas), Pearson 59 (59 in all subscores), BrunELT 63% (min 55% in all areas), TOEFL 90 (min R18, L17, S20, W17).

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the course are:


  • UK: Ł9,535 full-time, Ł7,145 part-time, Ł1,385 placement year.
  • International: Ł17,400 full-time, Ł13,050 part-time, Ł1,385 placement year.

Teaching and Learning

The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, group tutorials, workshops, and seminars, as well as one-to-one supervision in the final year project. Students will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including 17 fully-equipped edit suites, Final Cut Pro X, Avid and/or Adobe Premiere, and cameras including Canon C100, Sony PMW200, Canon XF100, Canon 5D.


Assessment and Feedback

Assessment will be through completing practical work, including videos, scripting, storyboards, websites, coursework essays, and projects, seminar presentations, and video essays. All final-year students are required to complete a dissertation or project under the supervision of a member of the teaching team.

The course will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in the film and television industry. Graduates have secured jobs with companies including BBC, ITV, Granada, Amazon Prime, Framestore, and Ridley Scott Associates as casting agents, researchers, production assistants, script writers, video content editors, and film officers.
