Program Overview

Course overview

Gain a solid grounding in biomedical disciplines on this innovative Bioengineering (Regenerative Medicine) BSc. You will explore the fundamentals of biological processes, gain interdisciplinary biomedical know-how, and develop key laboratory skills. Our course aims to prepare you for an exciting future in the research, discovery, and production of regenerative medicine, which is transforming global healthcare.

Regenerative medicine

Regenerative medicine is a rapidly growing area, and this course offers opportunities for you to work towards a career at the forefront of the bioengineering profession. You will study a combination of biochemical, molecular and cellular knowledge, and engineering principles. This provides you with the scientific expertise to enable you to design tissue engineered constructs that repair, replace and rejuvenate damaged or diseased tissue.

You will i

nvestigate cells and the extracellular environments, tissue structure and function so you can explore the critical challenges of cell, tissue, and organ regeneration.

From the start of the course, you will build a solid foundation in the principles of biomedical science. You will discover the fundamentals of stem cell biology, tissue engineering, immunoengineering, drug delivery and nanotechnology. The programme will introduce you to innovative approaches to patient treatment and diagnosis, considering genetic variations of patients, environment, and lifestyle.

Laboratory skills

You will learn to work safely and effectively in a laboratory environment through lab and computer-based modules, to ensure you have the relevant skills to work in the sector when you graduate. You will undertake an intensive 12-week research project in your final year followed by detailed data analysis. This allows you to apply your theoretical knowledge to open questions around human health, cell, and tissue engineering technologies. Research activities are carried out in our excellent research facilities at the Guy Hilton Research Institute and Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt (RHAH) Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry. You will undertake your technical training and laboratory demonstrations in the state-of-the-art Central Science Labs on the main Keele University campus.

Our expertise

You will study in an inspiring, multidisciplinary, and research led teaching environment. Many of our academics are research active, with world-leading expertise in bioengineering. Expertise ranges from molecular biology to regenerative medicine and our teaching staff regularly have work published in leading scientific journals.

Student support

We offer you a supportive environment throughout your Bioengineering (Regenerative Medicine) degree. At the start of the programme, an academic mentor is allocated to you who will provide academic guidance and support.

A Student Experience and Support team is based within our Faculty, with a member of the team dedicated to the School of Pharmacy and Bioengineering. As part of Keele’s student services, they work closely with teams across Keele to you can easily access the support you need.

There is peer support and additional help is available from the School's Disability Liaison Officer who provides an additional layer of support for all students, particularly for those who have special learning needs.

You will have access to a mixture of advice and support services at Keele which include;

  • Learning Support and Academic Guidance
  • Disability Services
  • English Language Unit
  • Student Advice at Keele (ASK)
  • Student Support Services
  • Occupational Health Department
