Course overview
Explore two complementary and dynamic subjects on our Business Management and Economics BSc. The programme will provide you with the essential know-how that is highly valued by employers allowing you to capitalise on a broad range of career opportunities. You will develop your ability to analyse and think critically, enabling you to question the different business management and economic themes and debates you will study.
The business management element of the programme explores fundamental areas of business including how organisations operate and the strategies they use, alongside examining different perspectives on the employee/employer relationship.
Economics challenges you to think critically about the underpinning theories of various actions of households, firms, and governments. You will examine the decisions they make about spending and investments, hiring employees and how conclusions are made about market outcomes such as output, inflation, the stock market and interest rates.
Developing your business management and economics expertise
During your first year on the programme you will study core modules that will enhance your skills and knowledge in areas such as quantitative methods, which will focus your learning on the analysis and modelling of business information. You will explore the world of work and management, familiarise yourself with how markets work, understand how consumers and organisations make economic decisions, and learn about the developments in the wider economy and aggregate behaviour.
Alongside core modules you have a range of optional modules to choose from. At this level on the course there are opportunities to learn essential knowledge in accounting, marketing, human resource management and international business. Other topics include business law, managing people in the context of social change, and the opportunity to learn more about managing in organisations by working with other students to find a solution to a business problem set by a multinational corporation.
As you continue on the course compulsory modules will build on the knowledge you gained during year one. You will further your understanding of microeconomics and macroeconomics, study and apply your knowledge of statistics whilst gaining confidence using Bloomberg in our computer laboratory, examine human behaviour in organisations and look at the theory and importance of business strategy.
Optional modules at an advanced level enable you to choose from a range of themes depending on your specific interests and career aspirations. These may include themes such as recruitment and the various factors that can affect this, cost and management accounting, contemporary issues in economics, banking, finance , corporate social responsibility and social enterprise and alternative organising.
You will explore concepts and issues in operations and quality management, develop your intelligence around international finance and become familiar with different econometric techniques. Additional modules will teach you about the differences in global business culture, project managing international projects, managing the labour market and the market power of firms, exploring entrepreneurial activities and the role of small and medium sized businesses and the opportunity to work with a local SME or a ‘live project’.
Strengthening your employability
Work placement year*
In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. Choosing a work placement year between your second and third year is a fantastic way to gain industry experience. It can provide a valuable insight into what working in a specific area of business is like, and gives you the chance to familiarise yourself with the professional working environment and develop professional networks. A work placement also provides you with the opportunity to apply the theory you have learnt on your degree course.
*Students who require a visa to study in the UK may be able to add in a work placement depending upon the programme. The ability to add a work placement is dependent upon the UK Immigration rules at the time of the request. It may be that for some programmes students will not have the option to request a placement period to be added to their programme before they arrive in the UK and would need to apply for a new visa. There is no guarantee that a placement will be provided and that students who have a visa are subject to a number of restrictions on the type of work, including placements they can undertake.
International year
In between years two and three of your studies you can choose to spend a year or a semester studying abroad. This exciting opportunity enables you to understand your field from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks.

.Entrepreneurship year
Showcase your innovative abilities and ideas to develop your business aspirations. If you have ever wanted to establish your own start-up or have been inspired by your studies this entrepreneurship year is an amazing opportunity to develop your own business idea. You will undertake your entrepreneurship year working within
Keele’s Smart Innovation Hub.
The Entrepreneurship pathway is available to UK and international students. Yet for international students, the availability of the Entrepreneurship pathway is subject due to the latest visa regulations.
Student Support
We have a robust support system in place for our students. You will be allocated an academic mentor at the start of the programme who will review your progress, meet regularly with you, and is contactable by phone and email. Academics can also provide guidance about specific course modules.
A Student Experience and Support team is based within our Faculty with a member of the team dedicated to Keele Business School. They are part of the University's student services department and work closely with teams across Keele so you can easily access the help you need.
Extra assistance is provided by our School’s Disability Liaison Officer. They provide an additional layer of support for students with disabilities and can advise on matters relating to disability including dyslexia and specific learning difficulties.

Societies
We have a wealth of student-led societies here at Keele which cover a diverse range of interests. Joining a society related to business is a great opportunity to continue to develop your skills away from your studies. This is another excellent way of demonstrating your genuine interest for the area and can be beneficial when it comes to applying for graduate roles. It is also a great way to make friends and share interests with fellow students.
