Overview
Our Psychology and Education BPS accredited degree will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the mind and behaviour to examine how young children and adolescents learn and develop within an educational setting. You will explore a range of topics that focus on how psychology impacts everyday life including biological bases of behaviour, cognition, individual differences, human social interaction and lifespan development. To bring your learning to life, you will design and conduct your own psychological studies in our state-of-the art laboratories, for example conducting experiments or designing surveys.
Education modules have a strong focus on contemporary issues in education and policy making. You will consider topics including education's relationship to the economy, the nature of learning, childhood and educational inclusion, as well as the history of education.
In your final year you will have the opportunity to tailor your degree to your career aspirations or interests by choosing from a range of optional modules such as: Psychology of Climate Change, Health and Disease, Models of Cognition, and Race, Politics and Education.
You will also work on a final year project. This is an exciting opportunity to conduct a piece of research on a topic of your choice. You will work with an academic supervisor to develop a scientific research question you can address.
Examples of student projects from previous years include:
Bullying in higher education
Factors affecting attainment
Disabled students experiences of education
Self-efficacy and growth mindsets
Students perceptions of teacher's humour
Summer research assistantship
Our summer research assistantship scheme is a paid opportunity during your second or third year that enables you to work alongside a member of staff on a research project. The experience and skills you will develop, such as data analysis, can really help you stand out from the crowd when applying for employment or postgraduate study. Please note there is an application process for this scheme and the number of projects available will vary each year.
Study abroad
In between years two and three of your studies you can choose to spend a semester or year studying abroad. This exciting opportunity enable you to understand your field from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.
