Course overview
International Governance and Policy at Keele explores contemporary issues in international relations, examining the interactions between international organisations, national political systems, law, economy and business.
You will study the core disciplines of international relations, law and international business, and gain a strong understanding of how political systems operate worldwide. This refers to international organisations such as the United Nations; how they are managed, how they work independently and how they cooperate and build relationships with institutions and states across the globe.
You will also consider non-governmental organisations, such as businesses, charities and pressure groups and how these function within the constraints of modern society. You will be encouraged to evaluate evidence and draw your own conclusions to embed your understanding further. This involves investigating the practices of national and international political bodies, and the practical ways in which law and business work within those global systems.
Work Placement Year
On this course, you will have the opportunity to opt for a Work Placement Year in the School of Social, Political and Global Studies between Year 2 and 3. This will allow you to apply your knowledge and practical skills in a workplace environment enabling you to build key skills in communication, teamwork and project management. You will be able to demonstrate your abilities and creative thinking, working with fellow professionals as well as independently.
You will be supported by staff in your preparation to apply for a work placement that suits your interests and career prospects. This opportunity will allow you to develop both personally and professionally during your studies which will assist you in your employment after university.

You will earn your remaining required credits at Level 6 by choosing from a range of specialist modules in Business, Law, International Relations and Languages. Some will choose to take two language modules to fulfil the requirement for a 'competency' or 'advanced competency' qualification as part of their degree.

Teaching, learning and assessment
International Governance and Policy builds your understanding of international events such as wars, human rights abuses, and ecological disasters as well as the principle areas of law, government and business. This insight will build your awareness of different cultures and concepts, internationally. You will explore real world case studies to develop your analytical skills as well as conduct research, enabling you to draw reasonable conclusions and explanations.
