Program Overview


Course summary

Our PGCE SEND programme enables you to develop the professional and intellectual capabilities to prepare you for working with children with a diverse range of abilities and needs. You will benefit from placements in both Key Stages 2 and 3 - one will be in a special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school and the other will be in a mainstream setting. This will allow you to explore and critically reflect on the opportunities of multi-disciplinary learning.

Course structure

Our focus on KS2/3 is innovative and will facilitate your development as a subject specialist in English and Communication. You will be introduced to the expectations of the Primary Curriculum at KS2 in addition to English at Key Stage 3. The course aims to develop your appreciation of the significance of speech, language and communication in education. Verbal and non-verbal communication will also be explored alongside alternative augmentative and technological strategies.

SUPPORT

Our well-considered support system ensures you are allocated a Personal Tutor who will review your progress and meet regularly with you. Extra assistance is provided by our School’s Disability Liaison Officer for students with disabilities.

    Entry requirements

  • Achievement of least a 2:2 and preferably a 2:1 honours degree. In highly exceptional circumstances, an application with a Third Class degree could be considered.
  • Passes at GCSE in English Language, Science and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent).
  • A medical report which is deemed satisfactory.
  • A completed DBS enhanced disclosure which is deemed satisfactory by the SCITT.
  • UK citizens who have qualifications obtained abroad will be required to obtain a NARIC verification to inform the judgement as to the suitability of the degree for our programme.
  • As specialist pathways are offered, there is an expectation that candidates will have relevant prior study and attainment in at least one of these subjects/areas. This will relate to either a related A-Level, element of your degree or appropriate prior experience.
