Degree Overview:

This multidisciplinary course aims to develop students' knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes, and confidence to support, educate, nurture, and advocate for children, young people, and families. It examines how children from birth to 18 years old are viewed and the factors influencing their development, learning, and growth. Through Applied Psychology, students gain an in-depth understanding of its applications within education, including the influence of diversity on development, learning, and behavior. The course emphasizes the integration of theory and practice through tailored placement opportunities and community projects designed to broaden students' experiences and skills, supporting career choice and progression. Placements offer students the opportunity to work with chosen professionals and gain insight into their roles and responsibilities.

Year 1:

Compulsory Modules:
‘I have a voice’:
The 21st Century Child: Explores childhood and children from historical, social policy, psychological, and sociological perspectives.
Growing, Learning and Developing: Considers the ecology of children's lives, including the role of family and community, and their impact on children's and young people's development.
Problem Solving in the Real World: Introduces Applied Psychology, preparing students for further studies at Levels 5 and 6.
Child Psychology: Covers introductory issues in key areas of the British Psychological Society core curriculum in Developmental Psychology and its applications.

Year 2:

Compulsory Modules:
Introduction to Research and Enquiry:
Individual Differences: Explores the core BPS area of study of Individual Differences and its applications, covering historical and contemporary issues, personality, intelligence, psychopathology, therapeutic and humanistic approaches, and methods of evaluating individual differences.
Community Project: This experiential module allows students to apply psychological problem-solving skills to address a real-world issue.
Being a Professional in Children’s Services: Explores diverse professional roles within the children's, young people, and families workforce through guest speakers and a placement opportunity.
Health and Wellbeing: Promotes understanding of children's and young people's health and wellbeing by reflecting on issues like healthy growth, health inequalities, health promotion, social and emotional development, and its relationship with mental health.

Year 3:

Compulsory Modules:
Research in Practice:
Atypical Development: Covers the core BPS area of study of Developmental Psychology and its applications.
Organisational Psychology and Career Planning: Introduces students to the application of psychological principles to business and the workplace.
Leading and Working Together: Examines how professionals work together to support children, young people, and their families.
Contemporary Issues in Childhood: Focuses on current issues impacting children, young people, families, and professionals in their work.

Assessment:

Students are assessed through a combination of coursework, including presentations, projects, portfolios, and essays.

Teaching:

Modules are taught approximately three days a week with an average of 15 to 18 hours of taught input per week. The course includes in-person lectures, seminars, and workshops. There is also an expectation of independent study. Research projects form a key aspect of the course in Years 2 and 3, allowing students to follow their own lines of interest and inquiry. These projects can be targeted towards specific career routes, widening experiences in the field. The final year provides opportunities for students to engage in their own research and participate in a poster conference.

Tuition Fees and Payment Information:

Home Students

Our full-time undergraduate tuition fees for Home students entering University in 2024/25 are £9,250 a year, or £1,540 per 20-credit module for part-time study. The University may increase these fees at the start of each subsequent year of your course in line with inflation at that time, as measured by the Retail Price Index. These fee levels and increases are subject to any necessary government, and other regulatory, approvals. Students from the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey and the Republic of Ireland are treated as Home students for tuition fee purposes.

International/EU Students

The tuition fees for international students studying Undergraduate programmes in 2024/25 are £13,950. This fee is set for each year of study. All undergraduate students are eligible for international and merit-based scholarships which are applicable to each year of study. For more information, go to our International section.
