Applications

At UCS the programme runs from January to January each year. The next intake in January 2023. To be accepted onto the programme you must be employed by a local employer. For UCS apprentices – you will already need to be employed by Shropshire Adult Services or Telford Adult or Children’s Services or recruited specifically to the apprenticeship by Shropshire Children’s Services – adverts will be out each July/August.

The apprenticeship at UCS is run by a partnership board consisting of academic staff, learner mentors, and people with lived experience of social work services and employer leads for the apprenticeship. Feedback from Student Experience Representatives is fed directly into this group and informs the planning process.

At Warrington the next intake of the programme will be in September 2022.

To access the programme either at Shrewsbury or Warrington, you must be employed by a local employer to the location you are applying for and this local employer will support you in undertaking the course.

Applicants not from the UK may still be eligible to apply. For further information please contact apprenticeships@chester.ac.uk.

Information for Apprentices and Employers

The maximum funding cap for this Standard is £23,000.

The programme will be delivered as a hybrid of the approaches outlined above with some elements facilitated entirely online and others delivered on campus. The programme team have afforded consideration to student feedback to ensure the approach taken provides the optimum means of achieving the learning outcomes for each module, and all learning activities are informed by relevant research and practice.

In Semester 1 there will be 25% face-to-face teaching and it is hoped that in Semester 2 face-to-face teaching on campus will increase to 75%.

As you progress through the programme the pattern outlined above will continue but with an increased emphasis on experiential learning from placements. Your learning will be assessed via a diverse range of assessment tasks designed to mirror those that you might undertake as a professional social worker.

Programme Information

The programme will engage you in the following activities;

  • Work based learning which is designed to enable you to reflect on your own practice and learn through experience of engaging in the job of a trainee social worker.
  • Active learning in face-to-face or online sessions where you will engage in a wide range of activities such as scenario-based learning, problem-based learning, case-based learning, collaborative and team-based learning.
  • People with lived experience of social work services will work alongside the academic team to support you in developing a greater understanding of the perspective of the recipients of social work.
  • Social workers will share their expertise and experiences to extend your understanding of your chosen profession.
  • Directed and self-directed learning, utilising our impressive range of accessible and up-to-date online resources and materials to develop your independent learning skills.
  • Placements- experiential learning is a central pillar of social work education and includes the completion of placements where you work in another service, for example if in children’s services you are likely to have one placement in adult services and vice versa, or in your own service. Your two placements (70 & 100 days). The placements must take place in two contrasting settings.
  • Reflective learning- the opportunity to reflect on anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice. You will look at and think about the impact of all forms of discrimination and work on ways that you can challenge discrimination, working towards making your own practice and the practice of your organisation inclusive and helpful for all people using social work services.
