The BA (Hons) Education Studies gives you a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of education studies, and a range of practical, professional and key transferable skills to make you career ready.


Course Structure

Foundation Year Core Modules

  • Discovering the Social Sciences, Humanities and Law
    • A 40-credit module introducing you to the historical and contemporary development of social science disciplines.
  • Investigating Society and Culture: The Case of Crime
    • A 20-credit module exploring crime through history, politics, English and creative writing, criminology, sociology, psychology, and education.
  • Your Foundation Year Project
    • A 20-credit module where you identify and explore an area of interest related to your area of study through small-scale research.
  • Your Toolkit for University Success
    • A 40-credit module developing your personal and academic skills to help prepare you for university success.

Year 1 Core Modules

  • Education and the State
    • A 20-credit module discovering the key moments in the history of British education that have shaped current education policy, practice, and curriculum.
  • Language and Learning
    • A 40-credit module considering language in educational situations and developing your understanding of how language is learnt in childhood.
  • Learning Outside the Classroom
    • A 20-credit module exploring how learning happens in different contexts and settings beyond the classroom.
  • Skills for Education
    • A 40-credit module considering the importance of research to understand and approach problems in educational settings.

Year 2 Core Modules

  • Diversity in Education: Reality or Rhetoric?
    • A 40-credit module developing an understanding of diversity in society and examining how education systems respond to it.
  • Future Directions in Education (Level 5)
    • A 20-credit module understanding your strengths and areas for development, and developing graduate skills.
  • Safeguarding and Wellbeing
    • A 20-credit module enhancing your knowledge and understanding of the importance of safeguarding policies and procedures for children.
  • Students as Tutors
    • A 40-credit module developing your knowledge and key skills to be confident in delivering learning.

Year 3 Core Modules

  • Education, Identity and Society
    • A 20-credit module exploring and critically considering education in relation to the reproduction of social inequalities and the formation of identity.
  • Research Project
    • A 60-credit module developing your independent research skills on a topic of personal interest that relates to your course.
  • Supporting Vulnerable Children and Families
    • A 20-credit module developing your knowledge and understanding of vulnerability in early childhood, and how agencies should work together to support and safeguard children.

Entry Requirements

  • Any combination of recognised Level 3 qualifications.
  • Each application is considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • A typical offer is 32-64 tariff points from at least 2 A levels, T level, or equivalent.
  • GCSE English at grade 4 / C, or an equivalent.

Employability

  • Careers include a range of educational roles within schools, further and higher education, local councils, and library or museum services.
  • You may be able to progress on to a primary PGCE that provides Qualified Teacher Status with a good honours degree.
